Athens Hotels Turn Away From Antiquity

"Just when we were beginning to worry that “design” had become a synonym for “monochrome,” along comes a place like Athens’ Fresh Hotel, a place that’s bursting with color. And by color we don’t mean muted earth tones, or burgundy and brown leather — think, instead, of a palette that’s not found in nature, a selection of cartoon colors like safety orange, hot pink and lime green." - Mark Fedeli

"Designed in 2003 by Athens-based Tassos Zepos, the Fresh Hotel is a contemporary nine-story building in the gritty, up-and-coming neighborhood of Psiri. It makes up for its somewhat dated design tricks (think hot-pink Plexiglas reception area, Philippe Starck chairs, black leather couches, and all-white rooms) with its great value for money and trendy rooftop bar. Open from May to October, the roof, with its small pool and sweeping views of the Acropolis, is a popular hangout in the summer for stylish locals."

Fresh Hotel, Athens, Greece - Explore & Book

"This was the hotel that first brought the design concept to central Athens: an eye-catching modernist building in an understated part of the city with interiors that were unafraid of contradictions. Now one of Marriot's Design Hotels, their expansion into a neighbouring neoclassical mansion in 2023 welcomed in new suites and a fresh style. The lobby is awash with the national colours - cobalt blue and purest white - with funky low-slung couches and high-back chairs that invite you to lounge a while. From the oversized macramé weavings hanging from the double-height ceiling to the hand-painted plates that adorn the walls, it's clear the designers had fun. The playful décor continues to the bedrooms: a heady mix of deep blues, satsuma orange, pops of lime green and bright pink (not all at the same time), paired with industrial shelving, elegant pendant lights and clean lines. On the roof, there's a tented perimeter bar, sparkling pool and cushy couches with a front row view of the city. Look past the concrete roofs and satellite dishes and there's the Acropolis. Now the big question for any design hotel: is it fashion over function? We didn't think so, thanks to orthopaedic beds, soundproofing and cymbal-sized showers. When we last revisited, the hotel was just as hip and holding up in terms of comfort and friendly service. Fresh, indeed. Highs The rooftop terrace and swimming pool (open May-October) makes this one of the cooler destinations in Athens; popular with a younger crowd A great restaurant, cafe and two cocktail bars onsite - you may never want to leave Good bus and metro connections nearby (Omonia square) Spectacular views of the Acropolis from that top terrace Avant garde throughout, this place is anything but another cookie-cutter hotel Lows Psiri is not the prettiest area, still up-and-coming and a little seedy; it’s a good 10-minute walk to Plaka, 20 to the Acropolis Rooms are rather small and some lack storage space; suites are more spacious Some guests have complained of street noise in the rooms at the front of the hotel Bedrooms in the neoclassical extension feel more modern, making the rest look a little dated Bigger than most i-escape hotels; check in/out feels a bit impersonal" - Michael Cullen

Standard rooms were a little on the small size for 2 people. There was not much room to walk across to the other side of the bed. The bathroom was compact but modern and the daily housekeeping was welcome. Their lift system is a bit strange. The staff in the lobby and breakfast room were very helpful and lovely and the rooftop pool and bar were wonderful on a hot day.

The Fresh Hotel is a modern hotel that is in great condition and in a fantastic location. |The staff were incredible - very friendly and incredibly helpful. An amazing team who made our stay really enjoyable. |While the rooms aren’t particularly large, they were modern, clean, well designed and equipped. |The hotel has a lovely roof top bar and restaurant with great views and a pool. |In a good location, close to the metro, restaurants and tourist attractions. |And at a reasonable price that offered good value for money.

Very nice clean hotel in the centre of Athens. The staff was extremely friendly. We enjoyed a lovely varied breakfast and a tasty lunch at the rooftop bar. The view on the Acropolis is a nice bonus. We also booked a massage and it was one of the best we ever had. Our compliments to the masseuse! Do not hesitate to book this hotel. You will not be disappointed!

I’m a Marriott Titanium member and I travelled to Athens with my wife and 2 kids. I chose Fresh hotel as it had good reviews, and I reserved 2 rooms. I’d stayed there for a week and remained disappointed by the location, facilities and service. Location was my concern #1. Fresh hotel is situated in a high risk area - a nearby municipal market, dozens of small ethnic shops and adult video salons all make it a bit dangerous, especially at night time. Beggars all around. I’ve seen Gypsy kids, dirty and wild rushing into the hotel lobby. See attached the pictures of the hotel surroundings. I can’t say the management of the hotel addressing this risk properly: 1) Contrary to the Marriott standards, elevators aren’t equipped with the access card readers. They his means anyone can come to the guest floor right to the door 2) Flimsy doors are not equipped with eye holes or security chains 3) In-room safe is not mounted to the wall or furniture. A burglar can simply put it into his backpack and thank you for putting all your valuables in one place I hope this will review will help the management of the hotel to address the safety and security issues.

After booking a Mediterranean Cruise out of Athens, we knew we needed a hotel for a night prior. Our room was modern and the roof top restaurant/bar that overlooked the Acropolis was fabulous!!! The pool was nice but on the smaller side. The water was cool which didn’t make relaxing in the pool very welcoming. Breakfast was super and had a huge buffet. The first pot of coffee was free but then they charged for additional which we felt was strange.

The Fresh Hotel is an oasis of quiet and calm in the very center of the hustle-and-bustle that is the magnificent city of Athens. Our five-night stay at this incredible hotel was perfect in every single way!||I must point out that our group of eight was expecting our arrival to be on Wednesday, October 1; however, our cruise line informed us of the planned city-wide transportation strike for that day, and that disembarkation was recommended for Tuesday, September 30th. All five groups (two, two, one, one, and two of us) made contact differently to the Fresh Hotel to obtain an extra night. And while we were all lucky enough to be accommodated, each of us found all means of communication (whether online or by phone) to be easy and effective. We understand it was pure luck that this was possible for all five reservations; however, kudos to how easy this was for us.||Many thanks to each and every single person at this hotel with whom we had contact. So many names and so many positive interactions - trying to remember names! At the front desk, we were always welcomed upon our arrivals and departures each and every time we came and went. Both Vasili and Vasili (behind the desk and the luggage attendant) always interacted with us and had recommendations for us, as did everyone else there. All the rooftap bar people were outstanding as well, and delightfully engaged with me with my repeated questions about the Greek alphabet and language, as well as keeping us fed and refreshed with beverages. The breakfast room servers took great care of us in the morning, always eager to keep our coffee fresh and food choices stocked, as well as maintaining the dining room. Our room attendants were also always smiling while keeping us clean. Thank you to all for your positivity!||Rooms here are very naturally bright with light-colored painted walls and a nearly-white laminate floor. Black-out curtains, however, are nearly 100% effective when you want it dark. We were in room 411, which was spacious and comfortable, and had a bathroom that was spotless, featuring great water pressure and lots of hot water. A standard bed without a frame that was comfortable enough.||The rooftop bar not only has a spectacular view of the Acropolis and the rest of the metro area, but it features both indoor and outdoor seating. Both adult beverages and a full food menu (except breakfast) are offered, and in the multiple times we ate here, the food was always excellent, as were all our different beverages. Great thanks to every single person up there for dealing with the group of eight of us who were always welcomed!||Breakfast room personnel were equally as wonderful. These men and women moved like worker bees, keeping the food stocked, the coffee hot and plentiful, and the room cleaned and ready for the next bleary-eyed group of people in need of caffeine and sustenance. I wish I could remember names, but every single person there was wonderful!||By the way, I am now in complete withdrawals from the fresh Greek yogurt served to us. It is utterly addicting, and is, without a doubt, the best yogurt of any kind I have ever had in my life. Mix your with one of the sweets offered, such as strawberry jam, and you too will be entranced.||Also, special thanks to the front desk for acquiring for us breakfast boxes for our 4 AM pick-up time for our trip to the airport. We were each given a reusable lunch box with a box of orange juice, an apple, a meat-and-cheese sandwich, and a locally-made dried-fruit protein bar. What a thoughtful touch!||A couple of "quirks" to know about: first, all elevators in Athens work, but they are all unique. There are two sets of elevators in this hotel for guests; Lift B in the main lobby, which services both sets of rooms in this split-level building, and Lifts C&D which services all floor from the lower level of the lobby (down quite a few steps from the top lobby) to the 9th floor roof-top bar and patio. Lifts C&D are always going to be busy, and are designed for about four people. Anything more than that and you'll need to breathe in. And while they always worked and did exactly what they are supposed to do, you might have to wait at least one time for your elevator trip. But you will always get to your destination.||As for Lift B, this is the one closest to the top lobby, and as such, it is always the one used for luggage. If you can, plan on using Lifts C&D, as B has extended waiting times.||Also to mention is that the desk chair could benefit from felt pads or other cloth cover on the bottom of its legs, as the scraping noise of this chair could be heard from both the room above and the rooms beside us. Literally, though, this was the ONLY noise we heard from other rooms - it was otherwise silent at every single hour.||A few more hooks around both rooms of our suite would have been nice, but there is no reason for any kind of point deduction for this at all. We would have liked more in the bathroom to dry and re-use our bath towels to save the hotel from having to replace each day, but the only-two hooks here made that impossible.||We are 100% satisfied with our stay, and if we are ever lucky enough to visit the magnificent city of Athens again, we will definitely stay here again, no question. Thank you again to everyone for the hospitality!

Room was clean and modern, with a balcony. Nice accomodations. Service was mixed. The bellhops were very accommodating. However, the front desk personnel were less so. We had an early flight and wanted to check in early. We requested this in advance, with Titanium Elite status. We got there and they did not honor that. They said they were booked up. But even as dozens of patrons left there was no effort to be accommodating. Great location! Lots of stuff you can walk to or taxi to. Local neighborhoods, mixed with tourist stuff.

With so many hotels to choose from in Athens, the choice can be difficult, but you won't go wrong with Fresh Hotel.||We arrived early in the morning after disembarking our cruise and we were soaking wet from walking in the rain. We weren't expecting an early check in, but the front desk team prioritized getting us a room and we were so thankful for this. ||We used the hop on/hop of bus stop right across the street to help us get around town, which was very easy and efficient. So even if this hotel is a bit further from the main sites, taking the HOHO bus saved us many steps in walking and helped us see the city more than we would have otherwise.||The room was clean and comfortable and while small, had everything we needed. We also used the rooftop terrace with a great view of the Acropolis. While we don't usually eat at restaurants in hotels, we did enjoy some small bites on the terrace. The food was very good with many ingredients sourced from their own farm. ||And when we needed to check out at 3am and get a taxi to the airport, the hotel staff were exceptionally helpful, especially considering the 24 hour taxi strike. They even packed us a little breakfast to go, which was very much appreciated.||If you are considering hotels in Athens, Fresh Hotel is a great choice.
