"Why we love it: A 19th-century palazzo-turned-boutique-hotel that’s full of sophisticated details The Highlights: - Historic details like restored tiles, antique furniture, and traditional Maltese wooden balconies - Guestrooms with deep-soaking tubs or Jacuzzis - A central location just off Valletta’s main drag The Review: Formerly home to the Ellul family, this Victorian-period palazzo is now an exceedingly charming boutique stay that’s a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Fourth-generation brothers Matthew and Andrew Ellul converted the property, which sits on a quiet but easily accessible side street, into nine luxurious guestrooms, each uniquely decorated with restored Maltese tiles, wrought iron accents, richly hued rugs, and antiques sourced from around the world. Rooms also feature original works by local artist Ritty Tacsum as well as either a private terrace or traditional Maltese wooden balcony. One suite even has a piano, while several others boast free-standing bathtubs or Jacuzzis. In keeping with the Casa Ellul’s family-owned ethos, service here is friendly and personalized, making guests feel as if they’re staying in a friend’s home."

Casa Ellul, Valletta, Malta - Explore & Book

"All Valletta’s streets are beautiful. Tall 16th- and 17th-century terraced townhouses line narrow lanes, fronted with beautiful wooden and glass-pannelled balconettes. Casa Ellul stands on one of the loveliest of all, just a few doors down from Europe’s oldest theatre, with a glimpse of sea at the end. The warren-like mansion has been in the family for over 5 generations, and its wine-merchant sibling owners have overseen a fabulous labour-of-love conversion by local Maltese architect Chris Briffa. He’s created 9 suites that are all different, with lashings of character, style and charm. Original features including stone windows and a marble staircase have been maintained, and combined with modern touches such as free-standing bathtubs and work-of-art photographs. The courtyard at the centre has been given a stylish makeover, too, with a statue of a Greek god, bright designer chairs and a stripe of vertical lawn. This is an intimate place, the welcome is warm and the conscientious staff give great advice on what to see and where to eat. Highs Supremely comfortable beds (romantic doubles, spacious twins) and gorgeous bathrooms Sea views, terraces and Jacuzzis in the largest roomsA creative chef who whips up whatever you fancy for breakfast; they've added a restaurant since our visit, tooThe small size of the hotel allows for personal attention and lots of local recommendationsCentral location, walking distance from everything in Valletta, including the ferry for trips to Gozo and Comino (no need for a car) Lows This is an old house, so rooms are all shapes and sizesIt's not cheap, but it's worth every EuroAn adults-only property, children under 12 are not permittedWe can't personally vouch for the restaurant just yet, but we can't wait to visit" - Abigail Blasi

My fiance and I stood a few days at Casa Ellul and we have no regrets. The location is prime. We debated staying in Sliema to be close to the port but we really only needed to be in Sliema one day for our Blue Lagoon trip. Therefore it made more sense to stay in Valleta. This property is steps from it all. Yet ita quiet and safe. At no point did we feel unsafe here. Renniel is a complete gentleman. He is awesome and exemplifies what a good host / service rep should aspire to be. His cheerful demeanor and willingness to go above and beyond with our requests was highly noted. Breakfast is also on point here. The eggs Benedict and the homemade Orange Juice, top notch. Lastly we stayed in two room by choice. Suite 7 has its grandeur with the rooftop, jacuzzi and beautiful church view. However it is a duplex and not easy to walk up and down with luggage (bathroom is also on a different level from bed) . Suite 2, although more economical was much better for us. It was bigger, with double sinks and didnt lack its own character. Hope this helps.

This hotel was a highlight of our holiday. Despite being in the center of Valletta it was a haven of peaceful quiet. Peter and his team could not have been more hospitable to our needs. The breakfasts were perfection and the hot tub with a view of the rooftops of Valletta will stay with us a lifetime. Walking distance to all the best sites, we hope to be back one day.

Casa Ellul is a stunning hotel in the middle of old town Valetta. Everything about this property is a winner, and the breakfast setting was a perfect way to start the day exploring. Our room/ balcony made us feel like we were in a quiet yet bustling city. As nice as the hotel is, the staff really go out of their way to make you feel very welcome.||Thanks for a great two nights

Wonderful boutique hotel; staff is so friendly and helpful. Location is the best you can find in Valletta old town, and you can walk everywhere. Breakfast is superb, and we would particularly recommend to eat at the hotel restaurant Risette, where the chef offers a delicious gastronomic dinner with a marvellous blend of French and local flavours.

Our recent stay at Casa Ellul was a truly enjoyable experience, marked by warm hospitality, comfortable accommodation, and a superb location in the heart of Valletta. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Mariana at reception, whose outstanding service set the tone for the rest of our visit. She was friendly, warm, and consistently helpful throughout our stay—offering recommendations, assisting with arrangements, and ensuring we felt well looked after. Our room was beautifully appointed, with a stunning view of St Paul’s Cathedral, which added a real sense of occasion to our visit. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the shower was a delight—particularly welcome after navigating the summer heat. While the room was a little warm on arrival due to the 35° weather, it cooled down quickly and provided a relaxing retreat from the bustle outside. One of the highlights was enjoying a quiet evening in the Jacuzzi, which added a luxurious touch and allowed us to unwind fully. Casa Ellul’s location is truly excellent, making it an ideal base for exploring Valletta. Whether walking to historical sites, restaurants, or the waterfront, everything was within easy reach. In all, we found Casa Ellul to be the perfect blend of charm, comfort, and exceptional service. It was an ideal choice for our visit, and we would not hesitate to return.

Wonderful hotel. The hotel is small and beautiful. The staff is wonderful, and they were so attentive to our requests. The rooms are clean, well designed, and luxurious. The location is central in Valletta and steps away from the top restaurants and sights. I would absolutely recommend this hotel, and I would love to stay here again.

Simply a blissful experience. I selected the hotel to explore Valletta and surroundings during an extended week-end. I could not have selected a more suitable location, the staff are super-friendly and very helpful, the offered shuttle service from the airport worked perfectly and the food in the partnered restaurant will blow your mind.
