"Why we love it: A 19th-century palazzo-turned-boutique-hotel that’s full of sophisticated details The Highlights: - Historic details like restored tiles, antique furniture, and traditional Maltese wooden balconies - Guestrooms with deep-soaking tubs or Jacuzzis - A central location just off Valletta’s main drag The Review: Formerly home to the Ellul family, this Victorian-period palazzo is now an exceedingly charming boutique stay that’s a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Fourth-generation brothers Matthew and Andrew Ellul converted the property, which sits on a quiet but easily accessible side street, into nine luxurious guestrooms, each uniquely decorated with restored Maltese tiles, wrought iron accents, richly hued rugs, and antiques sourced from around the world. Rooms also feature original works by local artist Ritty Tacsum as well as either a private terrace or traditional Maltese wooden balcony. One suite even has a piano, while several others boast free-standing bathtubs or Jacuzzis. In keeping with the Casa Ellul’s family-owned ethos, service here is friendly and personalized, making guests feel as if they’re staying in a friend’s home."

Casa Ellul, Valletta, Malta - Explore & Book

"All Valletta’s streets are beautiful. Tall 16th- and 17th-century terraced townhouses line narrow lanes, fronted with beautiful wooden and glass-pannelled balconettes. Casa Ellul stands on one of the loveliest of all, just a few doors down from Europe’s oldest theatre, with a glimpse of sea at the end. The warren-like mansion has been in the family for over 5 generations, and its wine-merchant sibling owners have overseen a fabulous labour-of-love conversion by local Maltese architect Chris Briffa. He’s created 9 suites that are all different, with lashings of character, style and charm. Original features including stone windows and a marble staircase have been maintained, and combined with modern touches such as free-standing bathtubs and work-of-art photographs. The courtyard at the centre has been given a stylish makeover, too, with a statue of a Greek god, bright designer chairs and a stripe of vertical lawn. This is an intimate place, the welcome is warm and the conscientious staff give great advice on what to see and where to eat. Highs Supremely comfortable beds (romantic doubles, spacious twins) and gorgeous bathrooms Sea views, terraces and Jacuzzis in the largest roomsA creative chef who whips up whatever you fancy for breakfast; they've added a restaurant since our visit, tooThe small size of the hotel allows for personal attention and lots of local recommendationsCentral location, walking distance from everything in Valletta, including the ferry for trips to Gozo and Comino (no need for a car) Lows This is an old house, so rooms are all shapes and sizesIt's not cheap, but it's worth every EuroAn adults-only property, children under 12 are not permittedWe can't personally vouch for the restaurant just yet, but we can't wait to visit" - Abigail Blasi

Our stay at Casa Ellul was flawless. The hotel is beautifully designed, blending historic charm with modern luxury. Every detail was thoughtfully curated, and the room was both elegant and comfortable. The staff were warm, attentive, and made us feel truly welcome. Breakfast was delicious and served with care. A perfect boutique experience—we can’t wait to return.

Wonderful hotel. The hotel is small and beautiful. The staff is wonderful, and they were so attentive to our requests. The rooms are clean, well designed, and luxurious. The location is central in Valletta and steps away from the top restaurants and sights. I would absolutely recommend this hotel, and I would love to stay here again.

The wonderful staff and central location of this charming boutique hotel made our holiday. All the staff were friendly and helpful but a special thanks to Renniel and Hazel who recommended and booked our restaurants for the week removing that hassle at the end of a busy day exploring. If you enjoy fine dinning I also suggest you eat in their restaurant, Risette, what a treat and absolutely worthy of a Michelin star or two! Fabulous breakfast too!

Simply a blissful experience. I selected the hotel to explore Valletta and surroundings during an extended week-end. I could not have selected a more suitable location, the staff are super-friendly and very helpful, the offered shuttle service from the airport worked perfectly and the food in the partnered restaurant will blow your mind.

We had a 3 night stay at this amazing little hotel. Its perfectly located within walking distance of all of the main sights of Valetta. The rooms were well equipped with virtually every tv station available for you after a long day walking between the sights. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout. Their breakfasts were amazing too,my other half had eggs benedict every morning and said it was incredible on each occasion. Overall a perfect hotel, perfectly staffed and perfectly located.

We stayed at Casa Ellul in Valletta, in May 2025. The rooms are spacious and beautifully furnished, the mix of original features and modern finishes were tasteful. All the staff are attentive and professional, we would love to come back and would highly recommend.

The hotel and facilities were 9/10. Regarding the service, it was quite poor and rude, which I found unpleasant. Not to mention the gym access available as a hotel guest. The owner or manager insulted me for not having a towel. I also wanted to mention that the minibar charges were incorrect, and just for mentioning this to the receptionist without even asking for my money back, he had a rather unpleasant attitude. The staff are inauthentic and the hotel attempts to make money from ever minutiae detail, including breakfast in the room.
