A clean and inviting restaurant with a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. The staff were professional and attentive, and the menu, though short and simple, offered excellent options. We ordered the hand-thick noodle braised beef and a side of sliced beef shanks. The braised beef noodles were absolutely delicious—the beef was incredibly tender, the noodles cooked to perfection, and the broth rich and flavorful. I requested the dish to be spicy, and it delivered just the right kick. The sliced beef shanks, served cold with a side of salt and pepper, were also excellent—tender and flavorful, making for a great appetizer. Overall, it was an outstanding dining experience that I’m eager to repeat. As of this review, the restaurant serves halal beef and chicken, which is an added bonus for those who require it. Highly recommended!

Great hand pulled noodles, especially the wider ones, are perfectly cooked. They retain a certain chewiness. The braised beef is super tender and prepared as it should be. The broth is on the stronger side but matches well with the noodles. For the price, you can’t go wrong. Very surprised by some of the nasty comments left here.

Sat right beside the window where the chef made the pulled noodles and it was awesome watching him making it. Food have very authentic Lanzhou flavors. The side dishes are also very good

A must try is the braised beef soup and thank you for the recommendation who ever on that duty. Unfortunately I did not asked his name as I was busy enjoying my food. Its totally satisfies my cravings with soup. What i do like as well is how patient he is answering my odd questions. I will definitely come back to try other calan beef soup.

Some guy reviewed this place 1 star saying it's not authentic. Buddy you're 6000 miles from Lanzhou, a 1 star's when they spit in your food and kick you out. This place is delicious. Prices have gone up I agree but portions are still huge. Highly recommended.

Delicious handmade noodles, with a good texture and fragrant broth, comes in a pretty generous portion as well. We especially enjoy the cold side dishes in a combo set which helps round off the meal. Great place to slurp up some beef noodles!

I got the braised beef with thin noodles. Added 2 scoops of chili oil. Perfect! 👌 I also got the lucky Thick Noodle 🍜 Satisfied everytime. Hot inside to eat though, make you sweat.

Edible, but not good. And definitely not authentic. I've been to this place four times now and while the cost has increased each time the quality had declined. Today I ordered a "combo A": hand pulled beef noodles with seasonal appetizers and a tea egg. The broth tasted nothing like authentic Lanzhou beef broth. The seasonal appetizers (smashed cucumbers and julienned potatoes) were completely flavorless and mushy, almost like they forgot to add salt to everything, and then left them overnight to soften. Definitely not worth it for the price ($22CAD per person). The tea egg was okay but it could not salvage the disaster that was this meal.

Some of the best beef noodle soup ever. Very simple, clean, soul warming broth with your choice of noodles, some no frills sliced beef shank, a daikon radish slice for vegetables and some green onion, hot oil on the side. That soup is a true star but let's be real, the noodles are the superstar. I like the thick noodles, which have an amazing bouncy chew to them, are splurpable and is an art to watch them make it. No frills, but who needs that when you got food this good?

I have been wanting to try Calan for so long after seeing a post about them on Instagram, but just never got there until last night! The downtown location is cozy and clean (there is also another location on Centre Street N) with a decent amount seating space. There is no table service, a person orders and pays at the front, given an order number which is called when the food is ready. THE FOOD: noodles are prepared behind glass for all to watch, which is a big selling point of this place. I got the hand pulled flat wide noodles in the beef broth.The portion is huge! So much meat and the amount of noodles is bonkers! I took 3/4 of it home bc I couldn't finish it!! Re: drinks - there was a fridge with pops, not too much selection there. I don't actually know if the place sells alcohol bc I didn't see it? Ordering is kind of a confusing process, I actually pulled up one of their Instagram pics and just showed her what I wanted (or thought I did) and it worked out perfectly! No pics but I can confirm that everything came out picture perfect!

Hand pulled noodles are delicious. The beef noodles soup had just the right amount of spice, beef was tender, and thick noodles were nice and chewy! I ordered the combo A which includes sliced beef and a salty egg for the man. I had the stir-fried noodles with beef and veggies. This was perfect for my little guy and myself . Just a hint of spice but not enough that my baby couldn't enjoy the fresh noodles. Order at the counter. Sit anywhere. And pickup at the kitchen window. Street parking, free after 6PM. Service was decent.

Lanzhou style La Mian noodle with sliced beef or braised beef (not too chewy) and hand pulled noodles (made in front of you). chili oil added to make it spicy if you want, but nice fragrant broth, and you can choose between thin and thick noodle, wide narrow or wide flat. chicken and veggie noodle with brown sauce, all large portions. great for a cold day.

Saw a post talking about this place on Instagram so I decided to try it out. I ordered the braised beef soup and asked for thin noodles instead of thick noodles. However, they gave me both thin noodles and thick noodles in the soup. I barely touched my soup and went to ask for another one upon realizing this mistake. When they brought my new soup out it was the same one they gave me before and they had just pulled some of the thick noodles out by hand and served it again. Is it just me or is that not normal for a restaurant? I was under the impression that if they got your order wrong they would simply bring you a new one, especially if you barely touched the one they got wrong. Anyway, I thought the soup was ok. The broth was delicious, the beef was very tender and good, but I thought that the taste of the noodles almost ruined the entire dish. Something about the noodles, whether it was the thickness, texture, or taste, just threw off the entire dish unlike any soup I've had at a Chinese Restaurant. The place is definitely not as good as they claimed on Instagram, not even close, but the employees seemed very respectful and friendly.

We were so impressed with the original Calan Beef Noodle location we dined at two days ago that we came here with a party of four today for lunch. One guest wasn't familiar with the name but became excited when he saw the location, telling us one of his best friends who is from China comes here telling him, "this is where I eat when I want something as close to what my mom made for me when I was growing up." All I can say is, he grew up eating very, very well if it was this good. We opted for different dishes and can now confirm the breadth of what they offer is varied and all extremely well prepared. I had the #5 Hand Pulled Noodle with Minced Beef and Vegetable Soup with wide and flat noodles. Such a massive dish I could only eat half with the rest going to another in our party for lunch tomorrow. We also had #1 Hand Pulled Noodle in Beef Soup, and the two other dishes I can't recall. Sides of hot chili oil accompanied some of the dishes and was a great added complement. The consensus with all is that this destination is a keeper for the times you're looking for a hearty bowl of soup, noodles and more. We also opted for the tea eggs, equally lovely. If you come: Visa/Mastercard only, no American Express. Ample street parking in the neighborhood but nothing dedicated for just the restaurant. If you've been to the original location which is divey and cramped, this is a bit more modern and spacious. Very highly recommended.

Yes I love hand drawn noodles. I recommend their noodle soups and those are so tasty. I love flat and wide noodles and it's great that you can customize the noodle you want. The chili noodles with vegetables is delicious but you must be a giant garlic lover as there's lot of garlic which was amazing for me.

It does taste like the noodles comes from my hometown, I wish they had the raw garlic or sugar garlic, garlic make a beef noodle fanatic

Who doesn't love a big bowl of noodles? Calan Beef Noodle offers healthy portions of their incredible hand pulled noodles. It makes them stand out in the Calgary food scene. Not only are the noodles a great host for incredible sauces but they offer a sturdy texture that is super satisfying. I had been dying to try Calan for a LONG time. When their second location opened in the West End of downtown, only a block away from me, I had no excuse not to visit. Since then, I've had a couple opportunities to try them! RATING: 8.5/10 - Calan Beef Noodle Calan offers a great big bowl of noodles for a very reasonable price. Each time I've ordered, I've had leftovers for lunch the next day. You get to personalize your order with your choice of noodles and sauce, but the funnest part is you then get to watch them pull the noodles. They're fresh with every order! I've tried the Hand Pulled Noodle with Stir-fried Chicken and Peppers and the Stir-fried Beef Hand Pulled Noodles. They're similar dishes slathered in sauce instead of dunked in broth. The beef dish is covered in a flavourful szechuan sauce (leaves a slight burn on the tongue), while the chicken dish was soaked in a curry sauce. Both hit the spot, but I'd have to give the edge to the beef. Calan is perfect if you're looking for a quick stop in (when time permits) or an easy pick up. This place is take-out perfection.

The broth in the braised beef soup could be a meal unto itself! It's delicious. The flavour of the broth is deep and well developed...not that thin broth you find elsewhere. You can choose your spice level and the hand pulled noodles are so tasty! They have a nice snap to them when you bite them. The beef melted in our mouths and was also flavourful and delicious! Great portion size too! 100% recommend and will be back!

We have an office in Xi'an (China) where I was introduced to biang biang noodles. These are hand pulled noodles - THIS PLACE WILL NOT DISSAPPOINT YOU. Hand pulled noodles are fresh and made to order. The chili spice oil is authentic to the Xi'an region. This is my go-to location when I visit Calgary, and will go multiples times on the same visit.
