Cafe Pho Co – Hanoi, Vietnam - Gastro Obscura

"Cafe Pho Co, a coffee shop in Hanoi, takes the concept of hole-in-the-wall to a whole other level. Several levels up, in fact. To reach it, you must first walk through a clothing store, down a narrow hallway, then across a courtyard filled with birdcages, plants, and the occasional roaming chicken. Then, you’ll start ascending the stairs, up through what seems to be a home, past a family shrine and a portly ginger cat, and finally to the roof. You could sit on the floor below the roof, but then you wouldn’t get the same delightful views of the city, including the green expanse of Hoan Kiem Lake. Slide into one of the patio chairs and sip on cà phê trứng, also known as Vietnamese egg coffee, a popular style that adds a whisked egg and usually a heaping helping of sugar or condensed milk to Robusta coffee for a decadent, foamy effect. Chocolate fans should try the cacao trứng, which adds hot cocoa to the mix for rich, mocha flavors. If it’s hot out, the cafe serves iced versions of most of its brews, as well. You’ll place your order at one of the lower floors. While the service is known for being a little slow, that’s all the more reason to sit back and enjoy the view at this little space tucked away above all the bustle of the city below. This was part of our Michelin food tour around Hanoi and it was our last stop for the day. I'm usually sensitive to caffeine and it was already past noon so I went for the matcha. It was really delicious! My companions ordered the salt coffee and I got to taste it too, those were yummy as well. The cafe is such a fun little hole in the wall. You enter through a clothing store then climb a bunch of stairs to reach the seating area. The views of the lake at the top were a nice bonus!

Nice cafe nestled in the back of a store. It's a thing about the old quarter here in Hanoi, it seems there are establishments hidden down tiny alleys and at the back of shops. Place looks like a done up version of an actual dwelling. Decor and format looks very similar to that in Peranakan culture, probably reflecting the heavy Chinese influence in Vietnamese culture. While ground and 2nd and 3rd floor seating is available, this cafe relies heavily on the roof view of Hoan Kien Lake for it's appeal, and this was not lost upon me. Counter staff quickly escaped however, after seeing me, causing me to be unable to leave my luggage at the counter. Had to lug it up 3-4 stories to the roof. Very narrow steps, so it was awkward to lug my luggage up the stairs. Would have the liked if the staff were more helpful. On the roof, two women who appeared to be cafe staff also hogged the lake view and refused to move. Granted, it was late in the day. Drinks were nice but pricey for Vietnam. With all that said, had a nice time in this cafe, though improvements could have been made.

A hidden gem in Hanoi. I almost missed the place as it’s hidden behind the cloth shop. You can go upstairs to see the view and there is an AC area as well. We ordered iced coconut coffee and avocado smoothie and love both. Not too sweet and refreshing. Recommended to sit and relax here a bit especially during such hot afternoon😅

Finding the place was a bit tricky as it’s located inside a shop—you have to walk through it to reach the café. The entrance is narrow, and you need to climb steep steps to get to the seating area, which is in an older building. Once you’re up there, the view of the city is quite nice, especially for tourists. We did face some confusion while placing the order, which was a bit frustrating. The overall experience was just okay. I wasn’t entirely happy, especially compared to visits with family elsewhere. The coffee, including their signature egg coffee, was standard, but not quite like the one I had at MET.

Such a cool hole in the wall type cafe. Walking through the store and into the cafe feels like a Narnia experience and the cafe has such cool vibes. There are four different levels that you can sit and each of them have a different vibe. We sat on the rooftop, which had a nice breeze and a good view of the lake. The coconut coffee was absolutely delicious and I loved the touch of roasted coconut bits that gave it a nice crunch.

They had no food options when I was there. The iced oat milk latte was not good unfortunately. Other than that, the cafe is very beautiful and spans over three floors, with a rooftop with a view over the lake.

Tucked away down a little alley (as are lots of cafes in Hanoi), this cafe was lovely to sit at after a day of walking around. Very quaint and looks like a repurposed house maybe with lots of greenery to sit and relax especially on the middle level. Top floor had a great view of the lake! Ordered yoghurt w mango & avo (never had this combo before) and was very refreshing. Yoghurt wasn’t too sweet (sometimes yoghurt here is way too sweet especially w fresh fruit). Avo super creamy and mango nice a tangy!

Finding Cafe Pho Co is an adventure in itself, tucked away behind a "silkie handmade shop" and requiring a climb through a narrow alley and several flights of stairs that feel more like an antique shop. But this journey is undoubtedly part of its charm. Once you arrive, you're immediately immersed in an unforgettable experience. This cafe truly is a hidden gem, offering a perfect blend of rustic charm and breathtaking panoramic views. Perched high above, it often overlooks Hoan Kiem Lake and the surrounding ancient rooftops, providing an ideal escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The ambiance inside is wonderfully traditional and cozy, transporting you back in time with its old-world charm—it genuinely feels like stepping into a piece of Hanoi's history. And when it comes to the highly recommended egg coffee, you won't be disappointed. While many cafes in Hanoi offer this specialty, Cafe Pho Co's version stands out as one of the best in the city. Rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced, it's a must-try.
