Step into Brennan & Carr, a '30s gem in Sheepshead Bay where you can devour their legendary, beef broth-drenched roast beef sandwiches amid vintage vibes.
"The Dish: Double Dip Roast Beef Maybe you took AP English in high school, or Calculus 101. But at Brennan and Carr’s, you’ll learn something far more valuable—the ins and outs of Broth 101. Each of the three broth-ing techniques at this Sheepshead Bay sandwich shop are worth trying, but on your first visit, get your sandwich double dipped. The entire sandwich (thinly sliced roast beef, bread, and all) is dunked into an industrial vat of au jus, resulting in a brothy behemoth that you can only eat like a sandwich for a matter of (sloppy) seconds. Grab a table in the dark wood paneled room, and order a Budweiser on tap, because that is the only option." - bryan kim, sonal shah, willa moore, will hartman, molly fitzpatrick, neha talreja
"It’s a wonder Brennan & Carr — founded in 1938 — still exists. The solid brick structure with the Tudor trim and rustic wood signage was around when this part of Sheepshead Bay was still rural farmland, as the location beside Gravesend Neck Road, one of Brooklyn’s earliest thoroughfares, also attests. The specialty of the house is Irish roast beef, served with its own juices on sandwich or platter in much the same style as Los Angeles’ popular french dip. There are only a few other things on the bill of fare: burgers, onion rings, chicken breast sandwiches, beef broth, pie ala mode, and — as a tribute to its maritime location — clam chowder, served with oyster crackers. The dining room is dark, beer is served, and you can also order from a window on the Avenue U side of the building." - Robert Sietsema

"Irish roast beef is cooked into oblivion, then steamed, slice, and sluiced into a kaiser roll with plenty of broth, damp and delicious. Brennan & Carr was founded in 1938 in Sheepshead Bay when the surrounding neighborhood was farmland." - Robert Sietsema
"Established in 1938 in Sheepshead Bay when the surrounding area was still farmland, Brennan & Carr is New York’s answer to LA’s fabled French dip sandwich. A flavorful pile of beef, awash in its steaming juices, is layered on a kaiser roll. The beefy aroma arises from the sandwich like an early morning fog." - Eater Staff
