"Sourdough and Tarts, Surry Hills Queues consistently spill out onto the footpath at this little corner shop. A rusted metalwork sign above the tiny bakery café, situated on the leafy Bourke Street Surry Hills, reads ‘Boulangerie’. The creme brulee tarts are locally famous, and we're here all the time for a loaf of sourdough (plain, seeded, hazelnut and raisin, fig and cranberry or potato and rosemary). Nab a corner booth seat if you can."

Google
A little trendy bakery with a big name and pastries / coffee to match. Staff are friendly as expected. The lamb sausage rolls are the show stoppers here! Absolutely delicious. Coffee is good. Overall, good value.

Google
Tried their famous beef brisket pie and ginger crème brûlée- and they absolutely did not disappoint. The beef brisket pie had a crispy, flaky exterior and inside was extremely warm hearty and saucy with chunks of beef cubes and vegetables like celery and carrots. The beef stew taste it up gravy with a slight acidity. The winner however, goes to the ginger crème brûlée. The tart was very crumbly, and the level of sweetness was just right - there is a slight hint of ginger flavor, and the filling was extremely creamy and can fully taste milk fat. The cream inside on top is a crunchy layer of caramelized sugar and some pistachio nuts overall And extreme delight!

Google
My husband and I stopped at Bourke Street Bakery for their famous Pork & Fennel Sausage Rolls, Ginger Creme Brulee Tart and Lemon Tart for an early light dinner. We were definitely not disappointed. The service was fast and friendly. We sat outside and enjoyed our light dinner. Everything was delicious. The Ginger Creme Brulee was the BEST! - Dec 2024

Google
Their bread display looked great. We ultimately settled on a Classic Beef Pie, a Chia Bowl, a Muffin and 2 Long Blacks. I don't think they have the best pastries or pies -- I've had better ones from The Grumpy Baker. The Muffin was also too flaky and dry that it was messy to eat. The coffees were great. They only have street seating and the line to the counter tends to be long. The inside space can only accommodate 2 customers at a time. Service was brisk and not-so-friendly, maybe due to their busyness. OK to try this place 1 time.

Google
Love their pie, I had the Chicken Sweet Potato pie & Lemond Curd Tart. There was a queue in the morning & it's busy. A nice quaint bakery with outdoor seating.

Google
A two decade old bakery specializes in meat pie. We were strolling along Surrey Hill and a kind stranger pointed us to this corner bakery. It was awesome!

Google
A small and cute shop. The prices are reasonable and the food is delicious. It feels homemade. You can taste the original flavor of the ingredients.

Google
I went there for breakfast after 9, still quite a number of people in line and many more came consistently. I had one of the meat pies and flat white and got a slice of banana bread for take away. They were great for all day menu!

Yelp
The vegan eggplant, chickpea & mint roll was savory, flavorful, and hearty. The dough was nice and flaky and soft. The eggplant, chickpea and mint blended nicely. I did use the tomato sauce which added a nice flavor. Friendly service, lovely neighborhood. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
After conquering the Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach walk in Sydney, we craved a hearty snack. Luckily, we stumbled upon the original Bourke Street Bakery! This charming little shop with a vibrant mural boasted delicious-looking meat pies. Remembering a local's recommendation, we ordered the beef brisket, red wine, and mushroom pie alongside a sausage roll and ginger brulee. The staff, ever friendly, explained the "very Australian" custom of adding tomato sauce to the pie/sausage roll. We were happy to oblige! The first bite was pure bliss. The flaky, buttery pastry encased a rich stew of tender beef brisket, earthy mushrooms, and a delightful red wine gravy. Each element complemented the others perfectly. The sausage roll was tasty, but truly, the star of the show was the pie. We tried another meat pie later in our trip at the Bourke Street Bakery in Barangaroo, but it paled in comparison to this masterpiece. If you're in Sydney and craving a savory treat, Bourke Street Bakery's beef brisket, red wine, and mushroom pie is a must-try!

Yelp
Wow, the pies here are amazing! Came out steaming hot and the crust was supperrr flaky. Also got a lemon tart that was sublime! Line moves very fast and it's more of a grab and go place. They do have some outdoor seating but limited.

Yelp
As luck would have it, I happened to be staying about a mile away from the famous Bourne Street Bakery. Naturally this means that I schlepped it here almost every morning. I tried basically everything over the course of several days. The only thing I didn't really care for was the museli with yogurt and "fruit" (aka stewed cherries). The muesli itself was good but I didn't care for the fruit. Place does get pretty busy as it's directly in the middle of a neighborhood. Queue goes fast though. Great flat whites (as basically anywhere in Australia).

Yelp
We are visiting Sydney and found this place on yelp. My fiancé is a big fan of sausage rolls, so he really wanted to try the pork and fennel sausage roll. I love ginger, so I wanted to get the ginger brûlée tart. We both walked all the way from the Centennial Park to this bakery. After arriving, there's a line, but it moved quick. So, we ordered both the food items we wanted to try. The place is really small, just 2 small tables with a couple chairs around. We tried what we ordered. My fiancé didn't really like the pork and fennel sausage roll. He said it's not sausage-y enough. We both like the ginger brûlée tart a lot. It's pretty ginger-y and the brûlée is done perfectly. The tart shell and creme are not heavy. I recommend the ginger brûlée tart!

Yelp
Heard so many good things about this place and I finally got to try it. My friend and I walked over there on a Saturday morning around 9am and it was surprisingly not that busy. I had read that the sausage and fennel roll was great so I ordered that and a fresh squeezed orange juice. My friend also got a juice and the chicken pie. My roll was pretty tasty and the juice was delicious. Tried some of my friend's pie and it was nice, but a bit burnt. Overall this place is good, my food was nice but wasn't anything spectacular or out of the ordinary. Maybe there was too much hype? I wanna come back and get something sweet like the carrot cake.

Yelp
Been coming here for years. Seems like a pivotal spot to meet friends in the area. The pastries and pies are yummy and the breads tasty. Mostly I come for a coffee though and a danish. It's quite a spacious area with inside dining around small tables. Friendly staff and a clean inviting environment. There is some outdoor seating areas too if you want to enjoy some fresh air. I have seen them be very generous to charities through the donations of end of day bread. Good on them for helping out.

Carolyn L.

Yelp
I came here because friends said I MUST try it. It was near Bills in Surry Hills so it was only a few minutes drive to get here. There was a line though it moved pretty fast. There were a few tables outside for diners though it looked more like a place to grab and go as the bakery was tiny. I spent the time in line looking through fellow Yelpers' reviews for suggestions on what to get and finally settled on the ginger creme brulee to go. The tart was awesome. Creamy and sweet with a light gingery taste, and the crust was soft but not too crumbly when you bit into it. I wish I had bought more was my first thought after my first bite in the car. Tip: If you are a visitor and this is the only time you will be at Bourke Street Bakery, do buy more than you want as it is that good!

Yelp
Wham, Bam, Thank you Madame. Wham As you queue to go into the bakery, you wonder what all the fuss is over. Wham you get inside the rustic corner bakery and it is full a small selection of delicious, mouth watering treats! Breads, pies, sausage rolls, tarts, cakes, muffins and cookies. Bam As I order three tarts, lemon curd tart, ginger crime brûlée tart and the orange and coconut meringue tart, all I want to do is eat them. As soon as I have the first mouthful, Bam! Flavor sensation! YASSSSS Thank you Madame Leaving this place, I think damn I need to come back again and try more from the selection! Thank you Bourne street bakery.

Yelp
Simply amazing! This place alone would be reason enough to fly 9hrs to Sydney again. We sampled, the croissants (plain and almond) and a sausage roll (pork and fennel), but went back to then try a dark chocolate and raspberry muffin, a chicken and sweet potato pie, and before it was all over went back for a pear tart. If I had had my way, I would have ordered a bag of goodies to go too (even though they wouldn't have stayed in the bag for very long). The croissants were light and flaky on the outside, but were perfectly soft and chewy on the inside. Even the base of the dark chocolate and raspberry muffin was moist with no drink required to wash it down. The chicken pie had a crispy shell containing the warm chunks of white chicken meat and veggies. No seating inside, by luckily it was a nice day and late enough that there was an empty table on the sidewalk. Occasionally a line would form, but don't be discouraged, it moves very quickly. Everything was delicious and I'm already looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
If you are craving a savoury pie or sweet pastry, then Bourke Street Bakery is your place. It is a very popular bakery in Surry Hills and I can defintely see why... their food is delicious! They are famous for their pies and sausage rolls, especially the pork and fennel. It was a joy to eat for breakfast! Also loved their pear tart - hit the spot! Not much seating inside and out, so best to get takeaway!

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
The pies were fantastic. We got the regular meat pie and and non- traditional pie (forgot the name of it). They were both tasty but we thought the non-traditional pie was tastier. If you are in Sydney, I would recommend trying this place out :)

Sandy T.

Yelp
Cute little bakery in the corner with lovely outdoor seating. Got a wagyu corned beef sandwich ($9) that was deliicccious! It totally hit the spot as brunch for the day. Also got a mocha and a white chocolate passionfruit tart. The only lame thing about it was the pigeons. They are fearless and will fly onto your table/seat to get at the bread crumbs so keep watch of your food!

Yelp
Alright so after hearing about this from a friend and then read in several blogger articles about this place I decided that I had to try it out, despite the 3 mile walk ONE WAY! We got there just after 2pm and the queue was about 15 minutes long which was a little unexpected since the main breakfast, brunch and lunch rush were over. However, the line at this place never seemed to shorten. When we left - we got our food to go and say on the park bench since tables were scarce - the line was even long we then when we'd arrived! We got a chocolate almond croissant, lemon tart, and ham and cheese toastie which came to $18. The lemon tart had a nice smooth custard and good lemony punch; however, the bey thin Crust was overdone and burned. I like my crusts crunchy but when they give that burned taste it really distracts from the rest of the tart! The croissant was decent. Definitely not the best one I've had. The almond was a creamy crunch type paste in the middle which was ok, but I've had better. The croissant do itself was overdone on the outside and the layers weren't as moist and flakey as I've come to expect from croissants (but I could be spoiled after living in Europe). The Ham and cheese toastie was good, had some mustard in there, and would get again. The place was like a shoebox inside so hope the day is nice if you plan on sitting around to enjoy your food. All in all, I was glad we tried it but I wouldn't walk all the way again to frequent it. If I lived 1/2 a block away then definitely be back but perhaps stay with the fresh bread and savory items.

Yelp
(Similar review as my Gardners Rd shops review) Good old Bourke Street Cafe. If you live in Sydney east and you have never heard of this place; please start going out more! Located on 'Bourke Street'.... duh.... (actually there's also one on Gardeners Road as well, but they are basically the same! I go to both and I love'em both!!); it's an awesome Sat day brunch place with a few mates or actually nice enough to bring your better half for nice cup of coffe. [Personally I like the Gardeners Rd one more because it feels like a bigger place and a brighter atmosphere, but hey they are both awesome!] Personally on a good Sunny Day, I wouldn't mind being there with a book while munching on a sausage roll. Yes Sausage rolls... You have to try them... they are not your Coles $5 for 30 rolls but gourmet lamb/beef/pork rolls which are superb. Their pies... oh mh.. their pies are sooo good! Always great variety, that you just gotta try them. Their dessert pastries are just divine as well! Ginger Brulee cannot be resisted! A must try - Carrot Cake! Believe me; you will love it! Great pastries; awesome coffee; love their smoothies/ice drinks; and excellent atmosphere. Imagine this. If can give a 5 star review to this place; purely based on Sausage rolls, carrot cakes; you know, simple stuff... how good it must have been! drools¬! Only down side - You really smell like pastry afterwards if you eat in.

Yelp
My eight day Sydney work trip turned culinary excursion got off to a fantastic start thanks to Bourke Street Bakery. While there was a line out the door (as I hear there often is), the incredible selection, quality, and value made it one of if not my favorite stop of day one. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? There's no seating inside Bourke Street Bakery besides a small table with two chairs, but what they lack in seating space they make up for in culinary real estate. The days specials and classic treats line the walls, the counter, and the backboard, and with only room for maybe three or four people at a time inside the line quickly pours out front. Instead of growing weary and snippy at what must be a steady barrage of customers, the staff remain friendly and efficient, and you can be in and out in less than a minute if you have your wits about you with respect to what you're going to order. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? The desserts at Bourke Street Bakery are priced at a bit of a premium compared to the more savory goods, but that doesn't mean you should for a second overlook the brekky and lunch options. The pies and sausage rolls can come in at less than a fiver, which is tremendous value considering both the quality and quantity. I opted for a chocolate tart at $5 and a sausage and fennel roll for just shy of that, and the roll certainly provided some killer value. Other items are priced accordingly. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? Excellent. While the chocolate tart was pretty standard, the sausage and fennel roll was truly excellent, and it looked like the homemade breads were the real attention grabber for a majority of those coming in and out. The right ratio of flaky crust to sausage made this ages better than your average sausage roll, and I'd honestly wished I'd ordered another. Single Star Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? With such a wide selection and great quality at value prices? Yes. Star Granted.

Yelp
The good: Sausage rolls! Particularly the pork and fennel roll, though the lamb and harissa one is decent as well. It's also on a pleasant, quiet corner, which makes sitting outside on a nice morning quite pleasant. The bad: First, the coffee is subpar. Nothing specific, just not up to Sydney standards. Secondly, the outdoor seating area is quite trashy, with tables consistently covered in food and crumbs from the last guests. The pigeons are happy to chip in to help clean up, but the servers are a little slower to respond. The bottom line: I know that criticizing this places is grounds for deportation, but I'm willing to take the risk. Bourke Street Bakery is worth a 5 minute walk for a decent sausage roll, but that's above the extent of the praise I can offer.

Yelp
This weekend was my second trip here, and I was glad I went back, though I was also glad to have beaten quite a long queue by the time I got my food. I had a chicken and sweet potato pie with lemonade, although their coffee was memorably good last time. The pie was nice, but not outstanding. If I'd thought of it I would have ordered a sweet treat, but the long lines by the time I thought of it discouraged me. The line looked like it was moving quickly, at least, but then you have to wait for your coffee to be delivered (if you've found a seat). Although this place is great and has an excellent, well deserved reputation, don't trip over yourself getting to it. You can find food that's just as nice--without the long lines--at another cafe, especially on a lazy weekend.

Andrew O.

Yelp
I have no pride. Just because 96 people have already written about this place doesn't make me feel a little behind....much.... Ninety six. 96 reviews nearly all raving about this place and I've never been. How embarrassing- I mean NINETY SIX! Great sausage rolls, in case you were wondering. Never felt so inadequate in my life.

penny c.

Yelp
I can't fault my local bakery. The pork and fennel sausage roll, the lamb sausage roll, the beef brisket pie, the finger cream brulee and oh... the super moist and delicious carrot cake. Just to note the sausage rolls are only out of the oven at 10.30am so if you get there before that, you may be disappointed. Also don't worry about the queue, they are super efficient and quick. Just know what you want to order.

Katie Z.

Yelp
My friend took me here saying that it was a really famous place in Sydney. The bakery is tucked away on a relatively less busy part of Surry Hills and it is quite pleasant just sitting outside with a good pastry catching up with friends - seating outside is quite limited though so be prepared to take the food somewhere else to eat if you come at a busy time. I had the pistachio ginger crème brûlée - a combination which only makes sense once you eat it but it does ! Definitely adds another level to the traditional crème brûlée . I can still remember the distinct taste of this pastry now which makes this place even more memorable. Haven't given it five stars because I have only tried the one pastry but I would definitely be keen to try more when I come back to Sydney again !

Mariko F.

Yelp
This tiny little shop on the corner or Bourke St is a great little hidden gem. It's not much of a secret anymore, which is evident from the pretty long lines that are just about a permanent fixture here. The pastries and bread here are really fantastic. The croissant was nice and fluffy and the Rhubarb & Almond Tart was just the right level of sweetness. The real winners though were the Ginger Brûlée Tart and the Prune and Brandy Custard Tart. And I'm actually not a huge prune fan, but that tart was amazing. The brandy was a great way to start my Tuesday morning. I have to say that the servers seemed a bit overwhelmed by the amount of business that they were getting. The staff were in no way shape of form friendly. And it didn't seem like they didn't have he capacity to be, because they would take the time to chat with each other with smiles on their faces, but when they turned to their customers, they seemed stressed and were a bit rude. I have to say that my experience would have been better if I had felt welcome there. There are only 3 small tables inside, but there's much more outside. Basically, expect to be either sitting outside, or taking something away. What I thought was cute is that if you buy the Bourke Street Bakery book, you can leave it with them to be signed.

laura c.

Yelp
Call me crazy, but I don't quite see what the fuss is about. The line outside Bourke Street Bakery always goes on for days so I never get around to trying it, until the other day when it was only two person deep. The staff are incredibly friendly and I applaud their positive attitudes despite having to deal with a throng of people on any given day. I ordered the daily special, a salad with yellow capsicum, broccoli, potato, prosciutto and lettuce with a slice of sourdough ($10) (http://yelp.com.au/biz_photos/ceazPr5mJK7r8sK7oesqGw?select=Jjo0y7KsJNtDcg7glgE9IQ) and a friend ordered the pork sandwich ($7.50). We scored a table outside and the waiter brought the salad to me. It was a weird combination of ingredients but it worked ok and it was tasty. The pork sandwich was quite enjoyable. The outdoor seating had a nice vibe but there aren't enough benches to match the masses on the weekend. Service good. Food fine. But worthy of waiting in a line? Not really. I'm sorry. You can all go ahead and judge me now.

Yelp
Best tarts I've had... EVER! Bourke street bakery was highly recommended by a friend and fellow yelper so when I visited Sydney over the weekend, I went out of my way to drop by this much-hyped bakery. And it was every bit as good as it was hyped up to be! If only I could stomach every type of pastry in there, I probably would. Upon approaching the bakery, the aroma of freshly baked pastry and pies was a pleasant welcome. The retail front is little so the queue was out the door although the staff was very efficient and the wait wasn't long at all. It does mean that it helps to know what you want to buy because you will be spoilt for choice looking at the variety of perfectly made pastries on display! We got one of every little sweet tart they had available - chocolate, lemon, pistachio/custard, and meringue. Every single one of them was amazing and tasted as divine as they looked! I've also had the triple choc chewy cookie previously and decided to have it again for the trip back to Melbourne. Still every bit as yummy and chewy as I remembered it! My experience is missing the savoury selections from this bakery so I will have to revisit... Very soon! They have conveniently set up a couple of other branches across Sydney so for lucky souls who are in or will be in Sydney, be sure to try the pastries!

Justine C.

Yelp
Amazing overall, Can't wait for their Hot Cross Buns to come out. Hint: They told me a week before the big bunny day! Best to ring ahead just in case :)

Danielle L.

Yelp
Mouthgasms.... We recently had our work function catered by Bourke Street and I was worried I was going to be sued for sexual harassment because my team were so turned on. It's actually a little ridiculous that food can taste this good...I'm actually thinking they might lace it with illegal substance because seriously, it's addictive. Now, there's a reason why there's a queue around the block. It's not because people like to queue (especially not in Sydney, we're not the queuing type) it's because once you get to the front, purchase your goods and put it in you mouth the wait would have been worth it. I used to work around the corner from Bourke Street Bakery and I would make regular stop offs in the morning for a mocha and chocolate croissant (what, don't judge?) It was seriously worth giving up a dress size for these tasty treats... In case you weren't sure, I couldn't recommend this place enough - everything is amazing.....but if I had to pick...oh and trust me its hard... i would say you MUST try their ginger and pistachio brulee... (ps: feel free to stop by later to thank me - you're in for a treat!!!)

Ambrose C.

Yelp
I can't believe I am saying this, but I thought I had one of the best "brekkies" in the Sydney area so far. For about $13, I had an excellent blend of sweet and savoury flavours that morning by ordering a Ginger Creme Brulee tart, a Pork Fennel Sausage Roll and some Mocha coffee. The Sausage Roll, with a little tomato sauce (called "ketchup" in other versions of English) tasted really good. I really liked the flavour of the sausage and the texture of the pastry was not overly soft or rough, just right. The Ginger Creme Brulee tart had a nice sweet flavour, great creaminess, the texture of the crust was excellent, and the pistachios were an excellent garnish. The Mocha coffee was also a great complement to the Ginger Creme Brulee tart with a creamy flavour and a nice aftertaste. After my breakfast, I walked outside feeling good, ready to take on a beautiful day. The people there were very friendly, the outdoor seating is nice when the weather is nice and the neighbourhood seems to be fairly peaceful. When I was walking around this neighbourhood, I definitely felt like I was in a better place than my hometown. I came here before 8:30 AM, and at that time, there was not much of a queue. Overall, I definitely had one of the best, if not the best breakfast in Sydney so far. I really hope this place is consistent in making some of the tastiest baked goods, and I really miss that balanced blend of sweet and savoury flavours.

Christina C.

Yelp
Probably everybody's favorite bakery in Surry Hills! Essentially everyone recommended this place to me... and their sausage rolls... The sausage roll was indeed very tasty and it is on my list to return. I just need to plan ahead so I can try a few more of their popular items. The coffee, on the other hand, left to be desired... it wasn't at the same level as their pastries.

Grace S.

Yelp
I didnt experience much of a line as it was a rainy tuesday at 11am. (There were only 4 people in front of me). Yum, the food was good. I ordered the 1) Eggplant, Spinach, Chick Pea & Feta Sausage Roll....and it was a Mediterranean symphony in my mouth :) It cost only $4. I am surprised that it is not as expensive as I thought it would be, considering how famous this pastry chain is ! 2) Rhubarb & Almond Tart - OMG, so good. Almond taste is strong but yet not overpowering, such a good combination. Highly recommended....it's a small tart, but trust me, it put a smile on my (or anyone's) face :) The cafe itself is pretty small, so it would be wise to read the menu online beforehand (so you dont feel like an idiot blocking people behind you) , especially if there is a huge line over weekends or sunny days. There are only three small tables inside the cafe, but there is also a seating area outside. I will definitely go back to try other tarts :)

MC B.

Yelp
Son of a mother! This to me, is the best place in the world. I stumbled across their cookbook in a small book shop before I knew they even existed. What a find that was. I knew I had to fly down to Sydney and order everything on the menu. Fig & Barberri Bread, Lamb Harissa Sausage Rolls, Creme Brûlée Tarts, and the list goes on. Since my first visit, I have been there a minimum of 25 times. Each and every time, all products have been fresh, consistent, delicious, and just plain wonderful. I like to grab a sausage roll, flat white, creme brûlée tart, and yes, another sausage roll. Do yourself a favour and stand in the queue that circles around the corner and down the street. It moves fast and you will be glad that you did.

Dee M.

Yelp
Sis and I stumbled upon Bourke Street Bakery while meandering around Surry Hills trying to decide where to settle for late breakky and best coffee. I was elated to look across the street only to find one of my " must stop places to try" during my Sydney visit. The line was long, but moved swiftly. When it was finally my turn to step up into the quaint establishment, I had no clue what I wanted to order. Thankfully, I was greeted by a super smiley face behind the pastry counter who quickly offered to help with suggestions. She was very gracious and kind. I wanted to try the carrot cake, but since I was not going home straight away, I opted for the pear glazed muffin and chocolate tart. Both were quite tasty, but I enjoyed the muffin most. My sis enjoyed her raspberry chocolate muffin as well. She said it was perfect for dessert. Hooray for Bourke Street Bakery! I'll be back to try that carrot cake sometime this week!

Christina G.

Yelp
Best bakery ever. I make sure that every time I am in Sydney I eat here. The first time I found the place it was raining and I walked right past it. It is very inconspicuous on the corner. However, it was pouring and there was still a line outside! There is very limited seating inside, about three tables, so more than likely you will have to sit outside. Outside, there are very bare bones tables, so you know the food is amazing for so many people to be sitting there. Must tries: the Pork and Fennel Sausage roll, the ginger pistachio creme brule tart, the lemon tart, and the chocolate raspberry tart. Although, honestly, you cannot go wrong. It moves pretty quickly once you get inside, so you don't get to gawk at the food long before you order.

Yelp
Is this place for real!? If you haven't been here then I feel sorry for you! I feel sorry for those who die without trying these amazing, mouth watering pastries! Seriously! I don't have anything more to say!

Yelp
I went on a coffee-run mid-shoot recently. We were filming some scenes in Surry Hills, it was early and it was hard to focus without adequate caffeine in our blood, so I, being an accomplished (by my own standards) caterer, took on that mission. Mission: Get Coffee for zombified crew. I got a list of what everyone wanted and endeavoured to get some tarts as well, I was feeling a little frisky and knew of a hangout where tarts often go to. I jest, not that kind of tart, but more pastries and such. Anyway, I got the order from some of the girls that I had to go to Bourke Street Bakery and get them a chocolate tart each. It wasn't the closest establishment but I got the feeling that if I didn't comply I'd be down two allies on this film shoot. So off I went to Bourke Street Bakery, a bakery best known for seemingly having a constant line of people stretching halfway to Paddington. I have seldom gone there and not been confronted with scores of people all desperate to eat some bread and sup on a hot frothy beverage. I got to the front of the line and I made my order, Rhubarb pastry's, Macadamia scrolls, chocolate tarts, and of course the coffee. Now, being the producer on this film, I had a vigilant eye on the budget and these tarts were between $4 and $4.50 each and I was a bit worried. We'd had costumes made, props bought, equipment hired and severed hands moulded, but was the budget really going to be blown on pastries? I bought the food hesitantly, wondering how they managed to attract so many people day in, day out. Why the girls were adamant that we buy these tarts and not the ones at the cafe on the corner, and I hightailed it back to the set. Once returned, coffees bestowed, I took one bite of that Macadamia Scroll and I realised why. My taste buds may or may not have had an out of body experience. My tongue watching me eat in an astrally projected form above my head. The line, the prices; all worth it. There is a reason that people go to Bourke Street Bakery. And if you're on your bike it's conveniently located on the corner of, as the name suggests, Bourke Street, a road with the best and longest cycleway in Sydney. Go there.

Yelp
We always visit the Bourke Street Bakery when we visit Sydney. The breads and pastries are legendary and we love the pork and fennel sausage rolls (with house made tomato sauce). We think that the coffee is pretty good too. On this visit we bought a baguette to take away and it was as good as any we've had in France!

Yelp
As I walked up and saw the long line out the door I almost turned around and just went another direction. But I had been told to go to Bourke Street Bakery by a reliable source that I knew wouldn't steer me in the wrong direction. I hopped in line and was totally surprised to see how quickly the line moved through the tiny bakery. Those people know how to run a popular shop! I went for the pork & fennel sausage roll, despite not being a huge fan of either of those ingredients, since everyone in line seemed to be ordering it. So good! It certainly isn't the most attractive little thing, but it was so flavorful that I could totally overlook that. I was a bit confused when she asked if I wanted sauce with my roll so I just said yes and paid a bit extra. Fun fact to other Americans...sauce=ketchup. :) My husband went the sweeter route each morning (yes, we went a few times during our time in Sydney!) and had the Almond Praline Croissant. Oh my gosh. This was just as good, if not better, than the roll. It was flaky, sweet and creamy all at the same time. I eyed him with jealousy several times. This is a must stop for a quick breakfast in a cute neighborhood.

Yelp
On first visit here i wasn't that impressed with the muffins- slightly dense and nothing too spectacular. The hot chocolate was delicious and rich, but a little sweet. The bakery seems lovely and with it being so popular I assume we maybe made bad choices. Will come back to try some pies or croissants. ..... Ok- came back here to give it another try. And wow. The sausage rolls/pies and croissants are BEAUTIFUL!! We had the chocolate and almond croissant - and all I can say is thank goodness I don't live near here cos my hips wouldn't be able to take it. The sausage rolls are amazing, fresh, crumbly pastry and tasty! I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
This cute surry hills neighborhood bakery deserves all of the props that it has been getting. Even though it was pretty busy there in the morning, the staff was still pleasant. We ordered an almond croissant, lamb harissa roll, and rhubarb danish. Everything was fresh, perfectly seasoned and delicious. There's so much to try that to make a recommendation, I would have to make a few more trips. When in surry hill, definitely hit up this bakery!

Yelp
Recently, my other half went out on the weekend to pick up something in Ultimo and took a lot longer than he should have. His argument? The Bourke St Bakery was somehow on the way between Ultimo and heading north over the Harbour Bridge! I don't agree with his logic, but I do agree with his taste, as he brought home an assortment of delicious pastries to feast on, such as the tart. However, hands down the winner for me is still the pork & fennel sausage roll! A must to have it freshly heated and ideally outside, cause you'll make a mess from the flaky pastry. Why can't all sausage rolls taste this good???

Yelp
Bottom Line: I don't think I've met one person who doesn't like this place who has been. There is usually a line around the block, but it goes pretty quickly and it is most definitely worth it. Come early morning on a week day to beat the crowd. We've loved everything we've tried. My "go to" is the ham and cheese croissant. A buttery and delicious croissant sliced in half and pressed over a slice of melted cheese and salty ham. SO DELICIOUS. The tarts are lovely...all surrounded by a flakey crust. We've had the lemon custard and the rhubarb creme brulee. Both were delicious, but the I think the creme brulee is a can't miss. Also not to be overlooked are the muffins. The mixed berry is my favorite. To drink - both the cold chocolate milk (shake it well to let the chunks of whipped cream mix in) and the hot chocolate (rich dark chocolate flavor) are yummy.

Yelp
This is a tiny little place but it was full and bustling at 3 in the afternoon. They have yummy little goodies - everything was baked on site and looks delicious and fresh. Little custard tarts, muffins with so many berries it was soggy but not it a bad way and all the better for it (not like those muffins that are doey and you need to carry out a search party just to find a raspberry). Service is uber friendly. But the best bit - the mocha. It had real (as in actual and genuine) bitter dark chocolate rather than drinking chocolate. A place that takes their quality standards seriously.

Yelp
Tremendously overrated. In terms of my authority to say this - I've eaten here at least 30 times (dragged along by work mates) and eaten every flavour of their tarts, which were on every occasions burned, sickly sweet and almost unpalatable. Their pies and sausage rolls are average too. I've been with many people, many times - as I've said - and they all seem pretty happy with their purchases I suppose. So if they want they can log on and rate this place higher (they won't because they secretly know it's boring). They normally eat the four-cheese turnover and the bread loaves. Most else is either the same as elsewhere or worst. But one must remember one is in Surry Hills where one has to pretend one likes things that are mediocre lest one be ousted by the pseudo pacifist crowd. Maybe BSB were better in the past. So go there to tick it off your hipster list, get a tattoo about it and then find somewhere cheaper that does the exact same shit.

Yelp
Bourke St Bakery easily makes it into my top three patisseries in Sydney. Whether it's been weeks or months, one return trip to Bourke St Bakery and I am swiftly reminded as to why it holds such esteem. Propped on the corner of Bourke St in Surry Hills, if anyone ever says they'll meet you at Bourke St, you can safely make your way to the tiny patisserie which has now become synonymous with its namesake street. If you're able to snag a seat inside, then well done - you obviously have pristine timing and prowess. If you're unable to catch an inside table (don't feel bad, there's only two), then there's plenty of room outside as tables line the side of the building and a bunch of stools have been thrown street-side to catch a bit of sun. The tiny parameters of the shop mean that there's often a line (and by often I mean always), but it's worth lining up for their flourless chocolate cake and ginger crème brulee tart at the very least. And if you don't feel like the extra wait for a coffee, Bourke St also have delicious ready-made but super fresh drinks to go, pre-bottling their own ice coffees and fresh juices.

Yelp
"It's like a shop that respects bread the same way it respects you, it's all about the respect dawg, you know what I'm talking about. I'm all about the lemon tart man" Snoop Dog about The Bourke St Bakery "A remarkable and successful business that will certainly become a historical shop in decades to come. My favourite would be the sourdough" Barrack Obama about the Bourke St Bakery "It really puts pork & fennel rolls on a whole new level, it has creative insight with a food lover's perspective and a baker's experience" Anna Wintour I tried to get something off Johnny Cash and Sarah Jessica Parker but they declined. (The above comments aren't actual quotes but reflect my own opinion. Just in case the CIA visit me to press charges!)

Yelp
One of the best bakeries I've been to!!! I wish there was one in the States. During my 5 days in Sydney, I came here on 3 separate occassions because it's so good. They have delicious meat pies and pastries (I would recommend the almond croissant). Coffee is also delicious. I plan on ordering their cookbook when I get home!

Yelp
Really quaint, really tasty bakery. We had the pork fennel roll, the ginger brûlée tart, a flat white, a hot chocolate, and a pear rhubarb muffin. WOW. It was really delicious and fresh. The pear was nice b/c it wasn't too sweet. Really close to a nice stretch of shops. GO!

Yelp
This was the first place I was told to go visit. A must see of Sydney. Firstly, how great is Surry Hills. Beautiful areas, could easily wander around it for hours. Secondly it has this bakery. I had the Lamb sausage roll and it tasted fantastic, I can now see why I queued for 10 mins to get in! I can confirm its a must see.

Yelp
It's a high-stakes game in Surry Hills - picking up a sausage roll, that is - and if you don't come in with a precise strategy your lunch jaunt could easily end in disaster. As much almost happened to me: after ducking through the crowd of vacant gawkers creating a mess in the Bourke St. Bakery's doorway, I had to prove my worth as an experienced eater of lunch and order my food confidently. I went with an all-time hunger-bustin' combination: quiche and a sausage roll. The near-tragedy presented itself when it dawned on me that I'd only ordered one tomato sauce. Where would I apply it? To the sausage roll - the predictable move - or the quiche, whose eggy innards would elevate that sauce into red gold? Ultimately the decision was too hard, and I rationed out my ketchup between the two with care and finesse. It was the right choice - both needed the addition. The lamb sausage roll was the better of the two, glazed to a golden sheen, stuffed like a wellington with nuts and fruit and unexpectedly singing with crusty parmesan edges. No doubt, it was an advanced sausage roll. The quiche was less advanced - its rumoured feta was difficult to spot and, however generous the spinach was, the filling was imbalanced, with the greens and mushrooms forming a mound in the centre of an eggy ring. Meanwhile the tomato sauce trooped on admirably, punching well above its weight class. It'll serve as a reminder for next time I'm on a guerilla bakery mission: get your priorities straight in advance.

Yelp
Have you ever eaten a sausage roll and thought to yourself, if no one was around I would whisper to this roll and tell it how much it means to me, and if it was a spirit animal it would be a giraffe because it is so much higher above any other sausage roll? And gently sauce it with the homemade tomato relish and let it know how much of an impact its perfect combination of Lamb and Harissa has had on your life? No, me neither, but I tell you what, it is a pretty damn delicious roll and it probably does deserve that kind of treatment, so do yourself a favor and go and have yourself a special conversation with the Lamb and Harissa roll from Bourke street, you weirdo you.
