Restaurante Bonjardim
I heard a lot of good things about Restaurante Bonjardim so it was certainly on my list of places to try during my trip to Lisbon. My experience was mixed, while the food tasted great, everything else was shockingly bad.
Even outside of meal times, this place always seems to be busy, with people queuing outside, upon entering the queue I was not greeted or even acknowledged by a staff member and had no idea how long the wait was. After I was sat down by a server, I was not given any choice but to sit outside.
The service as a whole was bad, after being forced to sit outside, we were only given one menu between two people, it felt like the waiter had already decided for us what we were going to order.
We opted for the chicken, and went for the fries and rice as a side, after ordering I was originally confused at how he'd put the order through, in the end, he placed an order of a whole chicken with the sides, although this wasn't clear at the point of ordering or the menu.
I was told that this was gluten-free, but again the explain was brief and fast to the point if I hadn't have heard good things from fellow coeliacs, I would have been highly suspicious.
I was also very confused at the fact there is no peri-peri chicken dish listed on the menu despite it being associated with Portuguese cuisine and mentioned in a large number of reviews, it was only at the end of my meal that I realised it was actually in a sauce on every table, however my table was the only one in the entire restaurant which didn't seem to have it - this is because the waiter split my table with another party before sitting us down, with no mention of their iconic sauce.
For drinks, my guest ordered a Diet Cola, and I opted for water, my friend's drink was served with a salad (which we didn't order and the waiter was carelessly offering to multiple tables walking around like a headless rat), they forgot about my water and even after reminding them twice it never turned up at my table until I had to literally get up, go inside and get it myself.
The food was served very quickly, but again before I could even ask for my water which had still not turned up, or any sauces, the staff member had gone which led to me having to go inside to finally get my water and the sauces.
The food was VERY good, although due to the temperature being warm at best and how fast it was served, I would suspect that they prepare the chickens in advance and don't make them or even finish cooking them fresh to order, while the chips were hot, the rice was also lukewarm at best, despite this the rice had a sickness which I really liked and the chicken had great flavours and was juicy, as was the skin.
I was annoyed to have been bothered on three occasions by people asking for money during my experience here, one was a person begging for money using photos of their children to diners at tables and queuing for a table, and another was a busker who randomly started singing before approaching each table for money, before a sunglasses salesman approached me at the end. While I appreciate this isn't fully in the restaurant's control, the staff knowingly let this happen on multiple occasions and just watched, and it left me feeling so uncomfortable at myself (and other diners) being harassed.
2* - I really want to rate this higher as the food, despite a couple of small issues is VERY good but the service is awful, and to top it all off, despite tipping not being customary in Portugal or most of Europe as a whole, staff were persistent and passive-aggressive in regards to expecting tips despite delivering the worst service I have had in a restaurant in a long time.
