Bessou serves up a cozy slice of Japan with modern twists on comfort food, from fluffy pancakes to crave-worthy karaage in a laid-back vibe.
"Bessou restaurant tucked away on Bleecker Street in Manhattan’s NoLita neighborhood, where traditional family recipes are at the forefront. Bessou also translates to holiday villa or home away from home in Japanese. The restaurant uses a blend of saikyo and Sendai miso for a unique flavor profile in their dishes."
"Although they aren’t open for regular takeout and delivery, Bessou in Noho has free and reduced-price meals available for schoolchildren, the homeless, and anyone who needs it. "Bessou’s snacky Japanese food is a little hit or miss, but the hot honey karaage is an unquestionable hit. In fact, it’s one of the best bites in the entire market. Giant chunks of boneless chicken are tossed in a tangy, spicy sauce and topped with mayo, togarashi, and big slices of pickled jalapeño. The flavors are intense, in a good way. Just don’t let yourself be sidetracked by things like beignets or crispy rice bites, which are forgettable." - carina finn koeppicus
