Humans have two hands for a reason – one to hold a steaming coffee and the other to hold a freshly baked bread. Head to this bright and sunny suburban bakery in Fortitude Valley for some of Brisbane’s best pastries and sourdough. Just like their renowned parent restaurant, Agnes, the bakers here harness the power of fire to add complexity of flavours into both their sweet treats and savoury loaves. While you may come for a loaf of their famous smoked potato sourdough from Agnes, you’ll likely end up leaving with a couple of croissants, sausage rolls, scrolls and a slice of their heavenly Basque cheesecake.

Everything is good and the lines are long so don't hesitate to go hard on that savoury danishes, the myriad Kouign-amann and doughnuts.

📍Agnes Bakery, 85 James St, Fortitude Valley QLD 4006 This is another well-known bakery in Brisbane. It has a charming bakery vibe, with all kinds of bread lined up on the shelves — you can really smell the freshly baked goodies in the air. I wasn’t sure what to order, so I asked for recommendations. The staff member first asked about my preferences (e.g., sourdough, bread, or pastries), then whether I was in the mood for something savoury or sweet. I said savoury, and he recommended the ham and fermented chilli croissant, which is also his personal favourite. I cut it in half and could see the beautiful layers and textures. The subtle spice brightened the flavour. I really enjoyed it as a lovely afternoon tea snack.

It's not often you have a dessert and then think about it for a few days afterwards. The chocolate tart is that dessert here. If they have the chocolate tart then you need to get yourself. The seasonal plum dessert is good too. This was all on my first visit. I came for a 2nd visit today and got the potato pie and the chocolate croissant. The potato pie was great. Had a bit of everything inside with the potato to give it a warm taste. The chocolate croissant was good too. It had a nice flaky crust too. A must stop bakery if you're in Brissy....even for one night only. You won't regret it. Unless you can't get the chocolate tart too.

There is a line outside the door as per usual. It's easy to see why. A nice layout with quality bread and pâtissière is on display. We had a beef and mushroom pie a potato croissant and a kougin amann. Unfortunately the pie was lacking flavour and both it and the croissant were undercooked and doughy. The kougin amann was nice with a delicious custard and it was cooked through. The coffee is excellent! Friendly fast service. Don't be deterred if there is a queue. Perhaps we just got a batch from the oven which wasn't hot enough. Not prepared to give a poor rating on one visit. So 3 stars for the food. Hopefully next time it will be better. Recommended!

Ah, let me tell you about **Agnes**, the charming bakery in Brisbane that’s renowned for its croissants, which are simply the best in the city. This quaint weatherboard shack has a delightful presence, though I couldn’t help but notice the back has been sliced and covered up with plywood—an intriguing sight, indeed. Now, those croissants! They are a marvel—flaky on the outside, golden and crisp, with a soft, divine core that just melts in your mouth. Each bite is a testament to the baker's skill and dedication, making it impossible to resist. Agnes offers a tempting array of flavours. You have the classic chocolate that’s rich and indulgent, alongside fruity berry options bursting with freshness. The savoury varieties add an unexpected twist that keeps you wanting more. During my visit, I spotted those sourdough loaves on display and even saw the baker skillfully crafting them at the back. They looked utterly delicious, but alas, I simply didn’t have enough room in my tummy to try one. Next time, I promise myself! You can’t miss the long queues that often snake around the block. It’s a true testament to the bakery’s popularity, and while the wait can be lengthy, it only builds the anticipation. It’s a lovely chance to chat with fellow pastry enthusiasts while you wait for those heavenly treats. As for the coffee, it’s perfectly adequate, but it pales in comparison to the glory of those croissants. I’d recommend focusing on the pastries for a truly delightful experience. Despite the changes happening around the building, I hope Agnes continues to thrive and remain a cherished spot for all who appreciate fine baking. So, if you find yourself in Brisbane, do make it a point to visit Agnes. Grab a croissant or two, and perhaps save room for that sourdough next time. Your taste buds will be eternally grateful!

Agnes is a wonderful little place that is always packed. Their smoked bread is phenomenal and takes a ham and cheese sandwich to a whole new level. Highly recommend this cute little bakery.

Stunning spot for insane freshly baked goods, desserts and breads. Coffee is obviously top notch. Some of these pastries are the best I've ever tasted. Highly recommend!

Some of the best sourdough I’ve ever had. First tried it at salt recently on their banana toast and loved its chewy and fresh yet soft texture. Yesterday I decided to try the smoky potato fermented sourdough which is listed as one of their bestsellers. I am in love. Had with tahini and maple syrup and so chewy, fresh and buttery. Will be back. They did say the oven is malfunctioning so they were unable to make it as smoky as usual so I’m curious in the future how this potato loaf will differ in taste. Prepare for lines

Omg it’s one of the best bakery in the city I found so far!!! Always a queue but definitely worth waiting. The staffs are warming and energetic. Wide selection, made me hard to choose!! 100% get Basque cheesecake. God quality sourdough as well. I’d love to try all of them.
