"The bronze-tile pattern at the entrance of 57 Hotel—a 92-room boutique property in the heart of bustling Surry Hills—echoes the mosaic of windows that soar seven stories up. But the stamped-tin awning out front and the gold ceiling that undulates like a wave over the reception area (a plaster-and-metal base that was hand-painted gold) nods to Studio 54, the legendary New York club from which 57 Hotel owes much of its inspiration. The sunken lobby-lounge is the moodiest of the spaces, outfitted in black leather benches, shiny silver walls, spot lights and gray-and-black carpeting that recalls piano keys. This is the best place to catch up with friends over a complimentary Nespresso coffee or watch the Surry Hills scene unfold. Glass walls face lively Foveaux Street. The rooms upstairs offer a vintage-’70s vibe with a white-and-mauve palette playing backdrop to pops of color such as turquoise vinyl chairs in King rooms, topped with candy-striped pillows. The amenities are modern and include free Wi-Fi, in-room iPads, and a selection of films. The guest experience is also infused with groovy tunes curated by Sydney DJ Dre Branciamore, taking the Studio 54 theme full circle."

Where to Stay in Sydney (Updated 2025)

"I found this modern mid-range hotel well located near the central train station and Oxford Street; the contemporary rooms include flatscreen TVs and a desk, bathrooms have rain showers and eco-friendly toiletries, and there’s a complimentary continental breakfast plus a Nespresso machine in the lobby." - Matthew Kepnes

Could be the new go to when visiting Sydney. Awesome location. Couldn't get any better. After landing from a flight it was so quick to get here. The staff were so welcoming and kind. Got myself and upgraded room which was awesome and the room was huge. Everything is within walking distance and you really couldn't fault it. Oh also the free coffee and morning croissants such a great addition. Thank you team @57 hotel for making my stay so good.

We had to unexpectedly stay a night in Sydney recently. As we arrived by train and were taking the train to the airport the next day, the location was amazing! When we arrived our room wasn’t ready but the lady on reception (around midday 12/8/25) was so friendly, welcoming and helpful. When we came back early evening, we were greeted by an equally lovely gentleman. Our bags had been put in our room for us. The room was clean and well equipped. The bed was very comfortable. We will definitely stay again should the opportunity arise. Thank you!

We love everything of this hotel. Convenience, clean, great size of rooms, great variety of breakfast and great customer services. All of the receptionists are very friendly and helpful. They welcome us with their great smile, greet us every time when we walk in the hotel and answered all our enquiries patiently. We would give them 9 out of 10. we would say one thing we dont like is the bathroom. It’s bit less private due to the design of the glasses around the shower room.

Perfect place for solo travellers. Clean, close to restaurants, cafes, central station and trams. The room is big enough for one person or 2 the max. Importantly i slept good because I couldnt hear neighbours and noise from outside. Free light breakfast and coffee too. What an awesome experience. Love it! So coming back!!

I booked this hotel through Agoda & had a family issue happening, the hotel had no empathy & gave a straight no for free cancellation. I do NOT recommend this hotel for the level of service handling I’m receiving. Agoda told me to call the hotel to talk, I told them the situation (a family member was in hospital, urgent & grave, life or death situation), the hotel manager simply told me it’s very unfortunate but they will treat this as a no-show. They also advised me to complain to Agoda & Australia Tourism board, thus that is what I’m going to do. I hope people who are considering to book this hotel to realise the low level handling skills this hotel will show when a crisis occurs on the customer’s side where it’s not in their favor. For the hotel who will respond, spare it, I don’t need another insult from your hotel. I have seen some responses in the past who gave your hotel poor ratings. All I can say are these comments are legit & the hotel can honestly stop commenting guests who complain as “poor”. A response to the hotel in regards to their most recent response: "A business truly confident in its position addresses the facts of a complaint, not the customer's tone. My 'rudeness,' as you call it, was a reaction to your policy and service. The factual sequence is this: 1) There were service issues, 2) You enforced a rigid cancellation policy, 3) Agoda intervened to provide a partial refund, confirming the validity of my complaint, and 4) You chose to blame Agoda publicly. My demeanor does not alter these events."

I stayed at 57Hotel for two nights while travelling for work, and it turned out to be a fantastic choice. The location is extremely convenient—just a short walk from the railway station and well-connected to the rest of the city. There are plenty of great pubs and food spots nearby, and it’s even walkable to major tourist attractions like the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and The Rocks Market. The room was a pleasant surprise—clean, spacious, and much larger than expected, with a massive bath that made it easy to relax after a long day.

I was given the noisiest room in the hotel room 101 adjoining the lift and exit stairs. As the sound insulation is really poor and the lift lobby outside my room tiled it was non stop noise, hearing everyone's conversation, exit door loudly closing repeatedly, and the lobby being vacuumed before 9 and in the afternoon. On checkout I wasn't asked if I enjoyed my stay.|Great location, funky styling but terrible noise issues.|Also hot water was out when I arrived so couldn't shower before going out.

Very spacious, comfortable, calm, everything you need and within easy reach of transport to everywhere. Newish and clean. Very reasonably priced.|I will never return to the racket in the central city.||The room plan is slightly strange - bathroom between bedroom and windows, but it works very well!

Yelp
Convenient location in Surry hills nearby a lot of cafes and restaurants. Also right next to monorail and central station. In the morning , there is free pastries and fruits. There is free coffee via nespresso machine and free tea 24/7. It's a decent price for the quality. However, the bathroom is not well designed. There is no door separating the bedroom from the bathroom. It's just a curtain. Also, the shower has nothing to block the water from seeping out to the bathroom floor. As a result, everytime you take a shower the bathroom floor gets flooded making a mess and a potential slipping hazard. Not sure who designed this. Also, if you get a single twin bed room there is no outlets next to the bed. You need to borrow an extension cord from the hotel. Of note, they will let you borrow a travel adapter as well for free.

Yelp
The hotel is named after studio 57 and you'll see that immediately when you get into the disco lift. There's a disco ball and disco music playing inside. Free grab and go breakfast, tea and coffee served from 6-10 am. Refrigerated water available at all times. Items are small pastries and pre packaged lamingtons. Everything was pretty delicious. The front desk people are all very friendly. I'm giving a 3 star rating because of the room itself. The bathroom in particular was horrendously designed. There's a window looking into the toilet area and anyone from the adjacent room could view us at anytime if they dared to open their curtains. The window doesn't make sense because there's not even a good view from the window, its just a dirty alley way? Then the shower has no delimiter so water spreads everywhere. Really just a bizarre design, but it can be improved drastically by adding a curtain for that window. Overall not a bad hotel, just ask not to be placed in any room ending in 07 or 08.

Yelp
This hotel is conveniently located in the heart of Surry Hills. There are eateries right outside the door and the subway and railway is just 5 minutes walk. At the end of the block is a mid-sized busy grocery store which can be handy to stock up your little fridge. The room I stayed in seemed a bit small and the bathroom was quite funky. It was like a glass wall partition with curtains. It took getting used to. I was there for over a week. The staff was hit and miss. Let's start with the good. Jayla was amazing; so nice, down-to-earth and pleasantly helpful. She gave the place "warmth". I think if she managed this place the staff would most likely be set to a consistently higher standard. Elise was also very helpful. The bad: It seemed like there was a turn over in staff. Some of them were quite rude. For example one tall, dark "gentleman" behind the desk at night clearly seemed "annoyed" he was summoned from the back of the guest desk door and when I asked him if there were any convenience stores open late at night ( I had a hankering for some juice and not soda ) he said there was nothing at all in the area. I did not take his word for it and went out and found a tobacco store near the gym that I had went to which did sell beverages. The next day I was told that there was a 7 Eleven not too far way. The guy I asked turned out to be the Housekeeping Manager which was no small wonder. One particular housekeeper was obnoxious. She knocked on the door and I told her I'd leave exactly in a minute. She was all sour faced, said OK and she didn't come back at all! No towels, no toilet paper, no clean up. Here's the kicker, she did it again a second day. The hotel was quite apologetic and seemed sincere about it but come on. For what I was paying, really? When we asked another housekeeper nearby for attention she said that if was not one of her rooms and did not help. So what made it worthwhile: * The location * The free temp gym membership about 7 minutes walk away. * And the particular staff that made the difference in order: Jayla - You're awesome thank you - I almost changed hotels !!!! But your help, professionalism and genuineness changed that. Elise - so very nice and made me feel like someone else also cared in the hotel. * A good number of eateries, breakfast places - one in particular across the street from the hotel , and Sushi Train right next door to name a few.

Yelp
Super cute, convenient location, and a massive Nespresso machine that practically begs to make coffee for you. There's a 50% chance that you get to ride the disco elevator, which we all enjoyed. If you like a more mellow ride, there's a 50% chance that you'll ride the non-disco one. Either way, working elevators = good elevators. The staff was super accommodating when we had to make changes, which was cool. What was not cool was the absence of a mini-fridge. We had to pop off to the shop down the street each time we needed milk for our little one. Showering next to the main window was a new experience for me. I appreciated the frosted glass for privacy. It also took a bit of getting used to drawing the room curtain for privacy while using the toilet, but we managed. It was just kinda funny when we first walked into the room. We were like, "Oh, hey. What a great view of the entire bathroom!" Luckily, as a new mom, I've accepted that I have no privacy when I shower, so that part was easy. (The curtain could still be drawn if we needed). But honestly, for the price, location, and quality, it was great. I'd stay here again. I'd probably schedule or call to confirm housekeeping times, though. We made it a point to be out when we thought they were cleaning, only to find that they never came or were making rounds when we were busy with naps, dressing, or whatever. Not sure if that's important to you, but certainly something worth mentioning in case it is. Complimentary pastries, water, and wi-fi. Walking distance to Central Station, cool pubs, shops, and places to eat.

Yelp
Great stay at the 57 hotel. Super conveniently located a few blocks from the Central train station and in the heart of Surry Hills. Check-in was super easy and the lobby features a giant expresso machine that begs to be used along with a fridge full of bottled water. Free breakfast featuring pastries was also nice. The room itself wasn't huge but could sleep 3 as it had a queen bed and a twin bed. The bathroom is interesting to say the least... With the curtain open, you can see the entire bathroom but you can close the curtain if you want some privacy. Let's just say that this hotel might be better for couples than for friends/families because of the bathroom.

Yelp
This boutique hotel is indeed not bad. Convenient located in Surry Hills close to Chinatown w/ plenty to eat. Subway stations are close by & basically a lot of sightseeing & shopping places are within walking distance. Staff are friendly & helpful. Really appreciate the all-u-can-drink 24/7 Nespresso coffee & morning pastries. I always need those as soon as I'm awake. :P Disco Queen is a descent size. Really comfy bed w/ adequate air conditioning. So cool to have your own personal iPad! However, I did see a stain on one of a bed sheets. One of the mugs was dirty inside. One of the small towels had pieces of a dead insect. The area is pretty quiet except for the occasional loud noise caused by closing of doors, which could be startling while u r sleeping. Price was considered ok keeping in mind the convenient location. However, wish that they would provide a clear invoice w/ breakdowns in either a physical or electronic copy. They had pre-authorization, deposit, surcharge, etc... which could cause confusion.

Yelp
This boutique hotel is worth every penny. It's clean, in a great location next to Central Station, and has everything one needs while traveling. The interior design is modern and the rooms come with iPads which is a nice touch I haven't seen elsewhere. They conveniently serve water and have a Nespresso machine in the lobby. The location is walking distance to central station and crown street, where there's tons of food and boutique/vintage shops. The staff has all been helpful and accomodating, offering umbrellas for the rain and giving recommendations on where to eat/drink. I'd definitely stay here again on another trip out.

Yelp
It's hard to recommend this place enough. The location is great: just minutes from Central, making it easy to get just about everywhere by train or bus. (I also happily walked to and from Circular Quay, the Botanical Garden, and other places, but those distances may not be to everyone's tastes.) The rooms are "small" (by American standards) but very nice, and the size was not surprising (indeed, a tiny bit larger than I expected). Comfortable bed, usable desk, good bathroom, and very clean. Toiletries like skin balm. Air conditioning. Be aware that the bathroom has only a glass wall, which some people might not appreciate at all. A small nightstand would have been handy, but that's a minor detail. Coffee and tea are available in the lobby at all times, as is bottled water. In the morning there's a selection of pastries. There's also a Metro supermarket just down the block and it was easy enough to grab yogurts and other things from there. The hotel was accurate in their advertising of breakfast. The hotel provides free access to a three-floor gym about five minutes away. The gym was fairly well equipped and the staff there were welcoming. The WiFi quality was shockingly good, and without nuisance (unlike, e.g., hotels that expect you to keep re-authenticating). The hotel staff were really friendly. I would gladly stay here again -- indeed, the next time in Sydney this is where I'd check first. It's priced much cheaper than many Sydney hotels. It walks a fine line between economy (I don't want to use the word "budget" because that sounds like it's for backpackers, which would be unfair to this place) and "designer", and gets the right.

Yelp
The hotel felt very clean and new. I love the modern deco. Housekeeping straightens up and makes every spic and span again every day. It's small, but the design is very smart. Instead of a closet, there's a rack for about 5 hangers. We packed light and only stayed in the hotel to rest, so we had enough space for what we needed: sleep and shower. If your wardrobe is bigger, you might need to have a room bigger than the standard full-size we got. I have paid more for a room that size in downtown Chicago, so I have no reason to complain. Staff is pleasant and helpful. There's always FREE water, tea and coffee (machine) for drinking and even taking out on your day. Breakfast includes 3-4 types of pastries (chocolate, spinach & cheese...). We woke up late on Boxing Day and there was also delivery issue so no pastries for us that day, but it was okay. I love the location and how close it was to Central Station (10 minute walk maybe) and China town (15-20 min. walk?). The harbor was a few miles away (30min-1hr). Everything felt within walking distance, depending on how much you want to walk. The neighborhood was nice and quiet. There are some bars nearby too. We didn't explore too much.
