On the Grid : Bust of Sylvette

"The sculpture stands in the courtyard of NYU's Silver Towers designed by I.M.Pei in 1966 and was created from one of the five original busts in Picasso's 1934 Sylvette series. Inspired by Sylvette David, whom Picasso met in 1954. Pei personally chose to enlarge this one with the help of Norwegian sculptor Carl Nesjar who used a Betograve sand-blasting technique to create the 67-ton sculpture. It is based on a folded-metal original made by Picasso in 1954 when Sylvette modeled for it at age 19. This is one of over 40 portraits Picasso made of her in his studio in Vallauris in the south of France. Designated as a historic landmark. Go see what the other side of this sculpture looks like." - 345 Design
