"Mr. Moto—the fictional Japanese gourmand behind The Office of Mr. Moto in the East Village— has a more casual “home” in Williamsburg. The Residence replicates some of the same gimmicks: it looks like a mid-19th century New York home, with oxford shoes, bow ties, an umbrella with a golden handle, a violin, maps, and more. Behind all this window dressing is some high-quality fish, particularly as sashimi atop kaisendon—the main focus of the menu. The Signature bowl (get it with added uni and ikura) is loaded with well-seasoned tuna tartare, scallop chunks, and strips of surf clam, but the most fun part is pressing a butler bell for the ochazuke: the rich sea bream broth that’s poured over your bowl once you’ve finished most of the fish. The Residence is less of a commitment than omakase at The Office, so bring some friends, round out your kaisendon with things like scallops grilled with bacon, and start with a round of uni shooters. photo credit: Kathryn M.
