"It’s hard to categorize this place—is it a market? An artists’ compound? A gallery of shops, cafes, and restaurants? It’s all of the above, set along a cobblestone street beneath a suspension bridge in a former industrial stretch of Alcântara. We killed a few hours here, grabbing coffee and fudge-like brownies at Wish Slow Coffee House, and popping into Ler Devagar Bookstore, where you climb ladders and stairs to reach a lovely old gentleman giving personal tours of his Rube Goldberg-like machines." - Laura Dannen Redman
