Like many tourist towns, Hoi An harbors more than its fair share of tacky souvenirs, but a growing contingent of enterprising locals and expatriate entrepreneurs has given the town’s retail options a much-needed shot in the arm. Aside from the ubiquitous tailoring outlets, the majority of Hoi An’s shops are focused upon arts and crafts, souvenirs, and gifts. Up in Da Nang, things are less touristy, with local markets offering an authentic Vietnamese shopping experience. Credit: Collected by Duncan Forgan, AFAR Local Expert

Hoi An lanterns shop

Craft store · Dien Ban

"Lantern Shop, Hoi An, Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. Hoi An is one of my favorite travel destinations in all of Asia. Sure, it's undeniably touristy, but it's also quite laid back and relaxed - nothing like other South East Asia tourist hotspots like Chiang Mai, for instance. Hoi An has a wonderful beach, gorgeous old town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and some of the best food on the planet - surely well known to AFAR readers by now. Hoi An is also a great place for shopping. Of particular interest here are tailored suits and dresses, but the city also has a neat little cottage industry of lantern makers. There are quite a few scattered throughout the city, with some of the best being found on the southern side of the river. That's where I came across this atmospheric little shop. If I ever have a hipster wedding, I'll be buying my lanterns in Hoi An. Prices are, as all things in Vietnam, wildly negotiable."

"Lifestart Foundation Workshop in Hoi An, Vietnam Disadvantaged locals support themselves by selling their handicrafts here. Sustainable souvenirs include vases made of chopsticks, and coasters fashioned from recycled magazine pages. The workshop runs a number of classes including traditional painting and lantern making, with proceeds going back into the Foundation"

Souvenir Hoi An Shop

Gift shop · Hoi An

"Grab a Bag The majority of Hoi An’s shops are focused upon arts and crafts, souvenirs, and gifts. The town is famous for its Chinese-style lanterns, and the family-run Hoi An Handmade has been lovingly crafting examples for generations. The shop also does a nice line in items such as craft bags, silk dresses, lamps and scarves."

Con Market

Market · Thanh Khe

"Trinkets and Tasty Treats Con Market is the other well-known traditional shopping marketing in Danang aside from Han Market. It offers a very local experience as it is where many families go shopping for their groceries and other items. Visitors can also taste a wide variety of local dishes at the food vendor stalls, a highlight for fans of Vietnamese food."

Items available to buy here include beautiful clothing, table runners, bags, home decor items and more."
