The Best Bars in Rome
Jerry Thomas Speakeasy
Cocktail bar · Campo Marzio
"At this speakeasy-inspired cocktail bar near Chiesa Nuova, hipster bartenders pour and shake American classics like Manhattans, Sazeracs and Old-Fashioneds in a smoky lounge. To gain admittance, make a booking and come armed with the secret password, a clue to which can be found on the venue’s website. Once you enter, you'll be shown to a table or barstool, handed a menu, and asked to fill out a membership card. Service can be slow and snarky, but drinks are worth the wait. Cash only."
Open Baladin
Beer hall · Campo Marzio
"Drink Italian Craft Brews This pub, owned by the Piedmont-based Baladin brewing company and Lazio's own Birra del Borgo, opened in September 2009 and was quickly canonized as the best place to drink Italian beers in Rome. There are over 120 labels to choose from, ranging from well-known Italian brewers like Baladin and Birra del Borgo to more obscure producers like Lover Beer and Troll; there is also a handful of American beers such as Sierra Nevada and Brooklyn Brewery. In addition to 100 bottled beers, there are anywhere from 20-30 beers on tap. The outgoing staff is happy to make recommendations. The food menu includes salads, sandwiches, potato croquettes, pasta and homemade potato chips."
The Court
Cocktail bar · San Paolo
"The Court, an off-the-radar lounge bar with front row seats to the Colosseum, is the perfect place to wind down in Rome . The bar overlooks the archaeological ruins of the Ludus Magnus (the site where the gladiators trained) and offers a view of sunset over the Colosseum, the world’s most amazing arena. The cocktails are the creation of mastermind Matteo Zed, one of Rome’s top bartenders, whose tasty Rising Sun (a gin, yuzu, and matcha cocktail) may well keep you at the bar until dawn."
Drink Kong
Cocktail bar · San Paolo
"Drink Kong is the neo-noir, Manga-meets- Blade Runner– inspired bar created by Rome’s Patrick Pistolesi. A labyrinth of dark-colored lounge spaces, with long bars, neon lights, and harlequin-patterned floors, Kong is both hang-out and experiment. Pistolesi, who has curated some of the city’s best bar menus and is one of the key players in Italy’s cocktail evolution, created an instinctive menu based only on flavors: bitter, sweet, dry. Either peruse the menu for a Kong signature cocktail like "Big Trouble in Oaxaca," a spicy and slightly fruity tequila and mezcal drink or chat with Kong’s expert bartenders who can craft cocktails customized to your tastes. Or take a leap of faith in the Omakase Room, a Japanese-influenced wood-paneled room for private tastings in the omakase style—your drink will be whatever the bartender chooses for you."
Barnum Roma
Bistro · Campo Marzio
"Rome's best craft cocktails By day, this café serves coffee, tea and snacks, while from 6PM until closing, it is Rome’s premier craft cocktail bar. Choose from the menu of house specialties and cocktail classics or tell bartenders Federico Tomasselli or Patrick Pistolesi your flavor and liquor preferences and they’ll whip up a drink to your liking."
Via del Vantaggio, 14
Building · Pinciano
"Aperitivo with a view The one-Michelin-star restaurant All’Oro relocated to the ground floor of the First Luxury Art Hotel near Piazza del Popolo in January 2012 and in the spring chef and owner Riccardo Di Giacinto opened his newest venture, this rooftop restaurant and cocktail bar. The name derives from the food menu, which offers only raw and grilled things, but show up before dinner service for cocktails at sunset overlooking the domes of Rome ."
Banana Republic Roma
Cocktail bar · Monte Mario
"Cocktails near the Vatican Skip the food at this risto-pub and head straight for the bar for classic American cocktails and house specialties made from small batch bourbons, single barrel whiskeys and rare rums."

"Top beer shop in Garbatella The craft beer movement is in full effect in Rome and small pubs and beer shops have cropped up all over town. Some are more serious than others and not all are worth a dedicated trip, but Birra + has been holding it down in Pigneto since 2009 and I routinely head there for my favorite hoppy New and Old world brews. In October 2012, Birra + became twice as nice when it opened a second location, in Garbatella. The new location is a bit smaller than the first, but equally worthy of a trip outside the city center. Expect the same array of quality bottles that will please any beer geek. There are only a few stools inside, so be prepared to stand if you want to drink in the shop, or buy bottles to take away."
Caffè Propaganda
Restaurant · San Paolo
"Enjoy a Handcrafted Cocktail- Or Two- in Rome Caffe Propaganda is just a short 3-4 minute walk from the Colosseum; but instead of being another tourist spot, it's a spot for locals and has some of the best hand-crafted cocktails in Rome . In the direction opposite from the hub-bub on the quiet Via Claudia, lies this gem that creates its extensive drink menu from fresh ingredients and spirits from all around the world. The vibe is classy and hip; it's definitely a place to check out if you're wanting to enjoy some of Rome's authentic evening 'scene,' not a place to go to after touring the Colosseum in jeans and tennis shoes. Come for a drink-- and most likely, stay for two or three."
Ma Che Siete Venuti A Fà
Beer hall · Campo Marzio
"Europe's best craft beer pub Routinely named among the best pubs in Europe, this quasi-dive bar in Trastevere has around 15 draught beers from the US, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Denmark as well as a wide assortment of bottles. The staff is unbelievably passionate and knowledgable and can guide you to the right choice for your palate."
Stravinskij Bar
Bar · Pinciano
"Hotel de Russie’s fabulous courtyard bar is the place to live Rome 's 21st-century dolce vita. The hotel itself is the preferred address for VIPs and celebrities, so it makes sense that the garden bar is a posh and private Eden. At any time of year, the city’s best-dressed hold court at the outdoor tables, while a seat at the indoor bar is akin to winning the Iron Throne. It’s important to note that, since the Stravinskij Bar single-handedly resurrected Rome's cocktail scene, drinks will cost you royally. Try the signature martini, The Gibson."
Blind Pig
Permanently Closed
"Drink craft beer in this Prohibition-inspired pub Walking into Blind Pig feels somewhat like stepping into a 1920s American speakeasy, albeit with an alternative rock soundtrack and a television. The Prohibition era theme offers a laidback atmosphere where tables are made from old liquor crates and the walls are lined with beer bottles. The drink menu focuses mainly on craft beers from small producers around Europe and the States, while the food menu is burger-centric, with a wide range of patties, including vegetarian options. Dishes are named after Prohibition-era gangsters. The Al Capone is a satisfying bet, a grilled beef patty topped with fried onion rings, bacon and pickles and best served medium rare. In addition to their standard offerings, Blind Pig has an aperitivo every Monday night; €5 gets you a beer and a mixed vegetarian plate."

"Cask ales and draught beers in Rome Located between Porta Portese and Ponte Testaccio, this pub serves a rotating selection of international cask ales and draught beers as well as an impressive assortment of vintage lambic and whiskey. The kitchen prepares many dishes with beer, like Tuscan pork marinated in American hops, served with a side of lambic-infused sauerkraut."
Il Goccetto
Wine bar · Campo Marzio
"Quietly inhabiting the lovely Via dei Banchi Vecchi, Il Goccetto (not to be confused with the Italian pro-marijuana organization by the same name) is a secret hidden in plain sight: acozy, wood-paneled wine bar with 18th-century ceiling frescoes, more than 300 bottles of Italian and French wine, and a chilled-out atmosphere. Come in the early evening to sit alongside locals reading newspapers or playing checkers, or waltz in late to experience the buzz of young, professional Romans who frequent this local favorite after dinner. No matter when you arrive, order the cheese plate."
La Gatta Mangiona
Pizza restaurant · Villa Doria Pamphili
"Monteverde's vibrant pizzeria and trattoria is an enclave of local flavor—from its excellent menu of fritti (fried starters), sfizi (delicious antipasti), and pizzas to its busy clientele. Owner Giancarlo Casa is a pizza perfectionist, and each month the blackboard menu features a dedicated pizza, often a creative pie not found anywhere else. Beer and spirits lovers will appreciate the extensive libations menu, which includes five pages of beer and a selection of fine whiskey and grappa."
