Ethnic Eats in Santiago
Ramen Kintaro
Ramen restaurant · Monserrat
"Traditional Sushi in Barrio Bellas Artes Kintaro has been a mainstay of the Bellas Artes neighborhood near Parque Forestal for over 15 years. The Japanese owner and sushi master are always on hand to ensure quality at this busy locale, day and night with a local (and Asian) crowd. Right in front of the Bellas Artes metro stop, it's a great place to people watch in addition to tucking into incredibly fresh, delicious sushi, rolls, sashimi, and ramen. They have a good selection of artisan craft beers to accompany. With the abundance of fresh seafood in Chile , sushi here won't disappoint. La Mar
Restaurant · Lo Lillo
"Deliciously Divine Ceviche at La Mar Santiago Chileans love their ceviche just like Peruvians so it was no surprise when this Lima-based "cebichería" (belonging to chef Gastón Acurio), announced its opening in Santiago . Nestled among swish boutiques on Nueva Costanera, the city's foodies quickly dialed in on the potent cocktails and fruits of the sea. While ceviche may be the house speciality (in about 20 different ways), don't miss the "causas," dainty potato terrines with seafood toppings and chili sauces, their "tiraditos" (cousin to sashimi) and hot dishes like grilled crab. Forego the wine and try a fun cocktail like a "cholopolitan"—a play on the cosmo with pisco instead of vodka. Nueva Costanera 3922, Vitacura Phone: 56 2 2206 7839"
Vietnam Discovery Restaurant
Permanently Closed
"Tongue-Tingling Vietnamese Don't judge a restaurant by its facade. Located in a gritty area of Bellavista (start of Patronato, garment district), Vietnam Discovery looks more like a takeout joint than a restaurant. Enter inside to another world. The restaurant opens up with a large Buddha statue and a fashionable crowd. This project was the answer to many Santiaguinos' prayers for bona fide Vietnamese (and southeast Asian) cuisine. Nearly everything we've tried on the menu has been delicious; we always start with their crunchy spring rolls with herbs. Reservations essential. Loreto 324, Bellavista Phone: 56 (2) 2737 2037"
Korean Restaurant Sukine
Korean restaurant · Monserrat
"Discover Korean Cuisine in Patronato The entrance is rather unassuming, with Korean characters and an English sign as an afterthought. Located in the heart of Patronato, now Chile 's "Koreatown," Sukine is all about authentic Korean fare. Order their signature bibimbap, barbecue, or the glass noodles and seafood omelette. The place is no-frills and you may smell like garlic afterward, but it's a glimpse into one of Chile's fastest growing immigrant communities with great food (and reasonable prices). Note: be careful after dark as the neighborhood in the evening has little light and all the stores have closed. Antonia López de Bello 244, Bellavista Phone: 56 (2) 2735 8693"
Astrid y Gastón
Peruvian restaurant · Lima
"Astrid & Gastón While some say Gastón Acurio’s flagship restaurant may have lost ground to Virgilio Martinez’s Central, Acurio has been instrumentalin putting Lima on the map as South America’s culinary capital and has promoted its cuisine throughout the world. Since 2015—following worldwide travels promoting the nation’s gastronomy—he’s back at the helm at Astrid & Gastón. You can order meals à la carte, but to truly experience the master’s touch, try a (short or long) tasting menu. Gastón’s wife and partner, Astrid, is a celebrated pastry chef, so save room for dessert. Pisco cocktails are outstanding, and a superlative wine list offers more than 250 choices."
W Santiago
Hotel · Monserrat
"Sublime Sushi and Peruvian-Asian Fusion in the W Hotel The Santiago outpost of Lima's most famous Nikkei restaurant (Peruvian-Japanese fusion), Osaka has been a smash hit since it opened in the W Santiago. Cosmopolitan, chic and with sensational sushi, come with an appetite as you try sushi with a twist. Savor their "tiraditos," a play on sashimi with citrusy-chili sauce or rolls with unorthodox toppings like gratin scallops. Perfect service, a beautiful crowd, and delicious food. Wine is extremely overpriced; we recommend sticking to the cocktail menu or paying corkage to bring your own bottle.
